You discovered if you use poor techniques, you could get bad results. Too close to the subject to use a flash, too close to a parallel object. You choose to use 4X3 aspect ratio to exaggerate the other poor choices you made. If anyone took flash pictures of me at 3 feet away I would not be very happy. You make it seem like this is a problem with this camera. I shot with this camera since it first came out and never noticed any shadow issues. You gave up the industries longest optical zoom because you don't trust yourself not to use it close with a flash? That was your decision, it wouldn't be mine.
