SARAH & CODY WEDDING

We were honored to be a part of Matt's sister's wedding on July 11, 2009. All of these pictures were actually taken by either Cody's brother or Sarah's friend -- so we are just shameless wedding photo pilferers. But it was a beautiful and glitch-free wedding...well done guys!

BABY BEN - Month 6

We made it to six months! Ben is pretty much a normal baby developmentally. He weighed in at 15 lbs 12 oz, which is the 29th percentile. He is now sitting up without support and has started eating solid foods. He is very fond of music and can recognize different songs that are sung to him. No teeth yet but they seem imminent. We have had so much joy and fun watching him change and grow so far. He is a super duper baby and we're extremely blessed to be his parents.

BABY BEN - Month 1

Benjamin has been an excellent baby so far, despite keeping mommy and daddy up at all hours of the night. He is unabashedly imperfect (a 9/10 on the APGAR; asymmetrical ears) yet incredibly lovable. He narrowly escaped the jaundiced grips of "Billy Rubin" and has been breastfeeding with presumed success. On Day 3, he pulled his knit hat over his face and officially took us hostage, and now our days and nights are lived in the palm of his tiny little hand.

BABY BEN - 1st Visitors

Introducing Benjamin (Bình) Matthew Winfrey, born 12:30am on 27 Dec 08 at National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, weighing 7lbs 5oz, and measuring 22 inches; all his fingers and toes are present and accounted for. God has richly blessed us with a precious baby boy, and we are so grateful.

ADVENTURES WITH MYRA

Meet our new kitten, Myra (short for Elmyra, her name at the Alexandria animal shelter). Her breed is "tabby with dilute tortie," meaning she is a tortoiseshell cat with beige and grey coloring. We've discovered that she has some curious traits of a puppy: she likes to pull on a leash with her teeth and she also wags her tail! We got some rare footage of Myra and her "cousin" Sergei, who is now 5 years old. Sergei was visibly and audibly unhappy at first, but after four days with Myra, he could barely tolerate her.

THE BABY SHOWER

We were given a really fun baby shower at Dave and Becky's house in St. Louis at the end of July. Jeanine was four and a half months pregnant at the time and just barely showing. Most of our friends and family from St. Louis were able to make it, so it was also a nice reunion event. We felt really blessed to receive so much love and generosity from everyone. Thanks to Becky and Paulette for organizing the shower and Jim for providing comic relief!

WASHINGTON - Cherry Blossoms on the Mall

We went to the Tidal Basin on April 2 to see the cherry blossoms during their peak bloom. We also visited the new World War II memorial for the first time and walked around the Mall for a bit. Then we took the metro up to Dupont Circle for dinner at Kramerbooks & Afterwords, Jeanine's favorite DC hangout. Washington is so peacefully pretty this time of year.

MARYLAND - Cherry Blossoms at Kenwood

There is a neighborhood near our parents' house in Bethesda called Kenwood that is full of cherry blossom trees. Though it is still largely a local event, Kenwood gets quite a bit of traffic during cherry blossom season. The kids seem to have a great time selling baked goods and lemonade on the street. It was a little bit cold this weekend and some of the blossoms had not fully bloomed, but it was still a marvelous sight. Praise God!

WASHINGTON - The White House

We went on an afternoon tour of the Rose Garden and West Wing of the White House on Sunday October 14th, courtesy of Stacey, our "friend in high places." It was a gorgeous sunny day, and the tour made us really appreciate being back in America. We got to see the Oval Office (which is so much smaller than it seems on television), the Press Briefing Room, the Old Executive Office Building, and the "Million Dollar Hallway" (which houses a rare collection of Norman Rockwell paintings), among other cool sites.

AUSTRIA - Vienna

Our last stop on our Eastern Europe trip was Vienna (which granted, is in Western Europe). We stayed there for three days and got to do many touristy things, including seeing an "authentic" apple strudel demonstration at the breathtaking Schonnbrunn Palace.

EASTERN EUROPE - Prague, Budapest, Bratislava, Szeged, Subotica.

One of the great things about touring Eastern Europe nowadays is that the train system works pretty well compared to maybe five or 10 years ago. On the "former Eastern Bloc" segment of our trip, we hit Prague (Czech Republic), Brastislava (Slovakia), Budapest (Hungary), Szeged (Hungary), and Subotica (Serbia) in only six days.

FAMILY VISITS - Anh

Jeanine's brother Anh was our last visitor in England, and also the luckiest because he got four days of marvelous weather in August amidst a horribly cold and rainy summer. We did lots of "last chance" stuff with Anh, including shopping at the Camden markets in London, punting on the River Cam in Cambridge, exploring the Cambridge University Botanical Gardens, and wandering through all the crooked houses of Lavenham. We also enjoyed some low-key rest and relaxation at home.

FAMILY VISITS - Dave & Becky

We spent a week and a half trekking around England and Scotland with Becky and Dave (Matt's sister and brother-in law) around early July. On our drive up to Edinburgh, we stopped by lovely Durham, walked over the Millenium Bridge between Gateshead and Newcastle, and narrowly escaped from a burning bus! We also toured the picture-perfect Alnwick Castle, where the Harry Potter movies were filmed. Back in Bury, we climbed around the Abby Ruins, fed the hungry ducks in Abbey Gardens, and saw two baby duckies in the river.

We auspiciously happened to see Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England on our trip to Edinburgh with Becky and Dave. It was probably the closest we'll ever get to feeling and acting like the paparazzi.

FAMILY VISITS - Dave & Renae, Sarah

Matt's parents and sister Sarah visited with us for several days in late May 2007. Yes - we were bundled up against the freezing cold and rain in late May. We had a great time exploring castles, walking around Cambridge, and touring the countryside and coast. Matt's mom was especially fascinated by Framlingham Castle, which used to belong to Lord Thomas Howard, Duke of Norfolk (one of our ancestors or so Mom kept insisting). Even though the weather was awful, a good time was had by all.

FAMILY VISITS - Chieu & Tien

Jeanine's parents recently came to Europe for a week to visit us and their friends in Munich. We had fun driving around the rural English countryside, and Jeanine's parents were especially fascinated by the free-range pig farms. We got to participate in Evensong with the King's College Choir in Cambridge, and we met some Vietnamese immigrants from Haiphong who now run a restaurant in Ipswich. The weather was cold and rainy for much of the trip, but as a result, Jeanine's dad got to wear a super-cool English driving cap!

FAMILY VISITS - Jessie

Jeanine's sister Jessie came to stay with us in Bury for five days. We daytripped to Windsor Castle, Stonehenge and the Roman hot baths in Bath (on the infamous "Mississippi Ladies" tour bus). We also saw the musical "Wicked" at a London theatre one night. The rest of the time was spent catching up, watching movies at home, walking around Bury, and trying in vain to prevent the inevitable post-holiday return to work, school and everyday life.

HOLIDAYS 2006

Jessie hopped the Pond to visit us after New Years and we had a jolly good time sightseeing and vegging out... Our friend Louise came over to watch "Pirates of the Caribbean 2" with us on New Year's Eve and we all vicariously sailed into 2007 together... For our first Christmas as a married couple, we had lots of fun decorating a nice big Frasier fir tree with all the trimmings. And for Thanksgiving, we spent a good long week preparing for a fun-filled festive feast for friends.

ITALY - Florence, Verona

We were in northern Italy for an Air Force conference and took a few days afterwards to visit Florence and Verona. Matt's favorite part of the trip was eating at Za Za's in Florence. Italians do know how to enjoy a good meal; their standard dinner is several courses plus dessert. Our waiter was shocked that we only ordered water and no wine with dinner...(not surprisingly, French waiters also react this way). In Europe, water is jokingly called "American wine."

WALES - Conwy, Beaumaris

We celebrated our six month wedding anniversary by driving through northern Wales. We stayed at a charming little B&B in Conwy, explored several of King Edward I's castles, and hiked along the rugged coastline. The highlight of our trip was getting to feed the hungry castle swans, ducks and seagulls in Beaumaris.

ENGLAND - London

Our friends Agnès and Frédéric from Paris visited London with us this fall. The four of us walked all over the city speaking in broken French/English. We saw Soho, Chinatown, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Harrods, Tower of London and Tower Bridge, the Tate Modern Museum, and the Museum of Natural History. C'était un voyage très mémorable pour tout le monde!

POLAND - Warsaw, Krakow

We visited Warsaw and Krakow over the Fourth of July weekend. It was Jeanine's first trip to eastern Europe. We especially enjoyed the night life in the town squares, which seemed very magical at times. We also spent one day touring the infamous Auschwitz Nazi concentration camp and learned a lot of sad and horrific details of the Holocaust.

ENGLAND - Lavenham, Ickworth

Lavenham, only 20 minutes away from Bury, is one of the oldest historic towns in East Anglia. The houses and buildings all have that distinctive English style and only seem like they are going to fall over. Nearby Ickworth is full of green pastures. We had so much fun hanging out with the cows and sheep, especially the docile yet skittish little lambs.

SPAIN - Madrid, Segovia

Jeanine and her big brother Anh visited their little sister Jessie while she was studying abroad in Madrid this Spring. Matt also flew in for two days to hang out with his new in-laws. We all took the bus to Segovia, where we climbed the famous aqueduct that was built using no adhesive, just stones and gravity! More Spain pictures on Jessies' blog at: jessmadrid06.blogspot.com.

ITALY - Islands of Venice

Venice was more colorful than we imagined and the perfect place to honeymoon after our wedding on April 8, 2006. We toured the main island, Venezia, and the smaller nearby islands of Burano, Murano, Torcello and Lido. Our trip ended with a peaceful gondola ride at midnight, when the water was beautifully still and quiet.

ENGLAND - Ely, Cambridge

Ely, 45 minutes away from Bury, is known for its massive gothic cathedral and the many eels swimming in the river (in the old days). Many of Matt's colleagues live in Cambridge, the closest big city to RAF (Royal Air Force) Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall. Downtown Cambridge is very bicycle-friendly and feels like a vibrant college campus.

ENGLAND - Bury St. Edmunds

We live in Bury St. Edmunds, a small town in West Suffolk named after the king of East Anglia who was martyred in 869. We are a half hour east of Cambridge and two hours northeast of London. Bury's main draw is the Abbey Gardens, which is very well tended and blooms beautifully from April to October. We also love the Farmer's Market, which takes place twice a week in the town center. Hope you can visit before we move back to the States!
