Week 49 of 2010 - Shot at Pacifica Pier where we attempted to catch crabs. We actually got zero on this occasion but the weather was gorgeous and casting out the net, pulling it back up, and seeing everyone else fishing made it a lot of fun.
Week 50 of 2010 - Shot at Kolina's home. I recently purchased a pair of Iron Heart jeans from Self Edge and was excited to wear them! This is a shot of the inside - love the detail here. Hidden rivets in the pockets, selvedge along the button fly, and extra heavy 21oz denim. Beats my Samurai 710s by 2oz but the cotton is from Zimbabwe and extra long so it's actually really soft, despite the weight. Will have a heck of a time breaking them in. I'll continue to update my jeans as I wear them in on my Denim album on Picasa.
Week 51 of 2010 - Shot on the beach of Waikiki at night using a slow shutter speed and my phone's LED light to write my name. Thanks to Kolina for the writing.
Week 52 of 2010 - Technically taken in week 51 BUUT I didn't take many photos this week and I don't want to have yet another photo backlog when I'm back from Tahoe for New Years. Anyway, this is Giovanni's Shrimp Truck. On the opposite side they make some delicious garlic and olive oil fried shrimp. It's decadent and a must have if you're out on this side of the island. They also let you write on their truck! Kolina wrote "Kolina + Reid 12/23/2010 We're getting married!" I took a photo of that which I'll upload later. Our message was dangerously close to "Nicole's divorce party" which came here last November!
Week 1 of 2011 - I love this photo because it sums up a lot about Kolina. One-handed photography while holding a Kona beer made from Kona coffee. This picture is coming from New Year's Eve in Tahoe, CA where we brought in 2011 snowboarding the slopes of Heavenly.
Week 2 of 2011 - Working on my bokeh with the help of Kolina. I originally had this Totoro facing the camera and the lights in the background on the right of the frame. Turning him around makes him look like he's headed towards the light, which tells a better story than one I had before.
Week 3 of 2011 - We had a surplus of eggs, flour, sugar, and butter, which is all you need to make pizzelles! My Mom and I would make these for my teachers when I was a younger, and she gave me an iron for Christmas, which I promptly used to make pizzelles for my coworkers. I brought it out last night to make more.
Week 4 of 2011 - After reading a few tutorials online I was able to get this photo of a full moon. This was the second night I tried; this first night I was out around 10:30pm, where the moon was much higher in the sky. My tripod was tilted and I was literally pointing the camera straight up, which was a lot harder than taking a photo just at dusk, where the moon is much closer to the horizon. I was completely zoomed in here and using a IR remote prevented some amount of noise. I read tricks about flipping the mirror up to prevent further vibration but I didn't do that.
Week 5 of 2011 - Minsi's gorgeous dog, Bubbles, was the photography subject during an impromptu camera night at Arden's place. A tripod, a still dog, and a low F-stop made this photo possible
Week 8 of 2011 - Okay, okay, I cheated on this one. Took this on Jan 29th in SF but I didn't have time (or was lazy this week) about taking a photo so pulling this one from the reserve pile to have something to post this week!
Week 6 of 2011 - Kolina drizzles white truffle oil on our homemade hamachi shots (if you go to Alexander's Steakhouse in Cupertino, you'll know). We paired our appetizers with Grgich Hill Estate Chardonnay, opening an excellent bottle one year after Linda gave it to me for my birthday. Photo would have been 100x better if Kolina had been wearing her engagement ring, but it is currently getting resized at the jeweler >.<
Week 7 of 2011 - My attempt at a water droplet shot. I started to take photos around 4pm, so I missed out on natural light which would have made this easier. I took a floor lamp and placed it near the kitchen sink and used a baking pan to hold the water. Kolina fashioned a makeshift dropper by poking a hole in a bottle and placing it at the edge of a plastic case that once held a knife sharpener from IKEA. Somehow, things worked. I originally used water but then mixed in some old coconut water from the refrigerator that had gone bad to add a bit more viscosity. I think that helped, although the challenge here is focusing on the droplets - I spent a lot of time focusing on a chopstick tip where the water was supposed to fall. Even then, a lot of photos were out of focus or I would just miss the droplet itself (one hand was squeezing the bottle while another was snapping photos). So, I guess a lot of things could have made this easier. This is what happens when you wait too long to take your photo of the week.
Week 9 of 2011 - I've been lazy about photography recently, which is a darn shame since there's been interesting weather to try and make the most of. Saturday was spent running around grocery stores to put together braised short ribs with cremini/oyster mushrooms and pancetta. It took awhile, but it was delicious. Lots of red wine helped :)
Week of 10 of 2011 - Inspired by a few wedding photography blogs, I decided to try a 'ring shot'. This is Kolina's engagement ring and it's atop the cork from the Cakebread Chardonnay wine we drank to celebrate our engagement. I did have some trouble with the lighting on this shot, even with a lamp directly above. I need more wattage!
Week 11 of 2011 - I picked nearly 30 tangerines from Kolina's backyard. And after juicing them I ended up with ONE GLASS of juice. But it was delicious!
Week 12 of 2011 - Jellyfish from the California Academy of Sciences. Very similar to the jellyfish you'd see at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, but still mesmerizing nonetheless.
Week 13 of 2011 - Save the Date cards are finished!! Kolina and I spent a few hours addressing out nearly 100 of these along with a few personal notes. Major props to vistaprint.com for printing these out (we tried Costco and Fedex and both sucked).
Week 14 of 2011 - A successful BBQ can be measured by how many people show up. Kolina has built a name for herself with some delicious chicken that I happily grill. We had a great first BBQ of the year last Saturday and hope to have many more this year!
Week 15 of 2011 - Trying to have a green thumb, I was inspired to try and grow basil! There's not a lot to show here, but hopefully in a few weeks the plant will sprout and then a few weeks after that, thai basil chicken!
Week 16 of 2011 - At the SF Cherry Blossom Festival, we walked by the unveiling of a 300 foot flag that was supposed to be photographed from the sky to show support for the Japanese. Apparently the helicopter never flew by but I did end up getting this shot. Sticking your hand as high as you can and clicking a photo sometimes works!
Week 17 of 2011 - We dyed eggs using onion skins! I'm quite pleased with the results compared to ten years ago when we used food coloring and vinegar. On the other hand, no egg sandwich for me since these suckers were in boiling water for 30+ minutes =( btw, the egg on the left has a cool pattern from adding rice to the onion skin wrap thing.
Week 18 of 2011 - Tiny seedlings in week 15 have surprisingly come up. Totoro has helped our basil grow!!
Week 19 of 2011 - What do you do when the future mother-in-law gives you 2.5 lbs of Jarlsberg cheese? You make a grilled cheese sandwich, of course!
Week 20 of 2011 - A statue of Jesus in the front lobby of the John's Hopkins Medical School. The school is non-denominational, but a hefty donation will let you put whatever you want in the front lobby!
Week 21 of 2011 - Baxter and Ball. He's soaked from his first traumatizing experience swimming in a pool
Week 22 of 2011 - Happy Birthday to my Kolina :)
Week 23 of 2011 - With the help of Wilmot, Eric, and Linda, I built a new computer!
Week 24 of 2011 - I'm falling behind on photos but it's been busy with wedding planning, sickness, and a fair amount of work. Here are the wedding invitations Kolina made. Aren't they gorgeous?
Week 25 of 2011: Well, not technically from week 25 but I'm trying to catch up with some crappy photos. Here is a snake from the Academy of Sciences Snake Exhibit.
Week 26 of 2011: The Obon festival in SJ Japantown.
Week 27 of 2011: Pesto! Four pots of basil yielded a bowl of pesto. It was delicious!
Week 28 of 2011 - Picked up this leather bracelet, made my 3sixteen from Self Edge. It's made of raw English Bridle Leather and will age over time, just like my raw jeans. Check this space in one year to see the difference!
