view from the guesthouse
selling his goods. not very adamantly though
Indians have an amazing ability to sleep anywhere, anytime
paan
likely to be used in a ritual sacrifice later =(
fatten 'em up! baaahhhh
I liked how this boy carried the board on his head.
A disheartening sight - this boy is rowing in the water on top of a makeshift raft made of trash
entrance to the Haji Ali Mosque
inside the mosque is saint Haji Ali's body. on the weekends, there's often a long line of people who come to pray here
posing for pictures behind the mosque
squatting
picture time
joshua navigating the terrain around the mosque
sharing a moment together
don't do it!
these boys wanted their picture taken. so i did
watching the womens' shoes
watching the mens' shoes
tons of trash just outside the mosque
where can i find that gold shirt?
the sweeping is almost fruitless, but she does it anyway
hats for sale
boats
they were playing a game, but i'm not sure what it was =(
clicked this photo before he asked for money (I ran away =p)
wonder what he was carrying
these boys saw us taking pictures and started smiling for the camera. joshua took their picture and is showing it to them now
not sure how much the sign will deter people, but it's there
yeah right
tempting, but i didn't get any
crazy buildings in mumbai
caught this fella walking his bike as we headed south
the northern part of marine drive. these guys are playing cricket
skyline
likely the place where this family lives
nov 26 memorial
passed this memorial along our walk down marine drive
a loud and colorful wedding band
cricket match! joshua explained the rules to me. now i almost get it
not sure what it's used for, but it looks sweet
pimped out wedding car
note, this was not the same wedding that the band pictures before was playing for. there's about 6 different wedding hall/areas on marine drive, all right next to each other. guess today was a good day to get married
we got tired of walking so took a cab down to India Gate
obligatory tourist photo. it is nice though. caption up top of the gate says: "Erected to commemorate the landing in India of their imperial majesty king george v and Queen mary"
taj hotel. still under renovation after the attacks
these birds were probably used to people running through them. hardly any moved
weee
inside the taj
they have cakebread wine!!!! 6500 INR = ~$140 USD for that bottle. Maybe 3x it's real value
kingfisher beer
thanks, josh
snacks, including wasabi peas
i had joshua put foursquare on his phone so i could check-in at places =)
pretty sure it's been improved since 1933, but a nice place. and hey, it's morimoto!
Brittania!!!!!!!! we met up with joshua's neighbor from calcutta, who is working in mumbai along with her husband. the food here was delicious and the owner was this really old guy who, after he found out I was from America, showed us a postcard with Bush and Obama. crazy guy. plus the chicken berry pulav was crazy delicious
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
this field had around 20 cricket matches going on, sometimes side by side. a person would hit the ball and often argue if it would have gone out or been caught. good fun
university of mumbai behind the open space
fireworks at night, for yet another wedding
so after spending some time in the hotel, joshua and I walked to Mahalaxmi station to take the train. I passed a lot of slum houses, which were right outside a Four Seasons hotel - wish I took a picture of that. The train, which is notorious for being packed, was quite empty, allowing me to take a few pictures.
the handle are so much closer together compared to trains in the US
we headed to Bandra (where the rich bollywood stars live) and found ourselves at a free concert. This is the group Mumford and Sons (http://www.mumfordandsons.com/) which was invited by the British Council to play a few shows in India.
excellent combination of pushed down striped socks, khaki shorts, banjo, and beard
pretty talented guitarist
getting into the bass/banjo
bandra station - heading down south to get dinner
prakash is hired!
I sure was bonafide!
party in the slums. yup, they're in the middle of the train tracks
trains were even emptier

Churchgate station
Bademiya --- go here if you're in Mumbai. Excellent kebabs, chicken, etc
preparing the skewers
rolling the rolls
this guy was a pro. he turned out like 20 of these in the span of a minute
too fast for the 50mm
marine drive at night
sunday. headed to dhobi ghat, the world's largest outdoor laundry
apparently everyone sends their clothes here to get washed.
colors are combined together, but somehow the rightful owner gets his clothes back
joshua and I were lucky enough to walk around, a rare opportunity most tourists don't get (they look from atop, which is where my pictures at the end were taken from)
every available space is used for washing and drying
gotta keep yourself clean too
zomg
i have no idea how they keep track of everything
taking down some sheets
washing the clothes means beating them on some limestone
weeeeeee!
this looks like a good workout
wonder how many times they hit the clothes before it's considered done
smack
pretty sure this guy was trying to spray me
close, but nope
good form
it's everywhere
jeans are really popular in india
removing the paint on this old taxi
dhobi ghat from above. lots of dress shirts drying on the roof
insane
hand washing the fabric
somehow it works
running out of things to say about the dhobi ghat. unfortunately the wikipedia article does not have more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dhobi_Ghat
wide angle lens to capture the size
got your white sheets here
Very tempting!
tying up a bag of dark jeans. this must weigh a ton
frommers snippet of the place: http://www.frommers.com/destinations/mumbai/A21960.html
Jama Masjid - we weren't allowed in though =(
tandori chicken and butter naan
Papa Pancho
I didn't go inside because I wasn't hip enough
wandering the streets a bit
This boy looked like he lived inside a demolished house at the corner of the street.
back at the guesthouse to rest on sunday. low tide
checked out Chor Bazaar (Thieves Market) in the evening. too bad this place wasn't open
lots of lamps
power tools! too bad I couldn't take these as carry-on
