Some Eskdale Birkett tops with Neil

Neil invited me to join him for this walk. I'd walked the Birketts already but was happy to do them again as I love Eskdale. Some of the route was new for me as we climbed directly to Border End from Hardknott Roman Fort and also joined up the last three tops with the others over a route we made up.

Little Stand & Crinkle Crags from Cockley Beck, plus some aeroplane wreckage

Last time I was on Little Stand I walked it as an out and back route and thought at the time it would make an interesting climb from Cockley Beck. I'm not sure why Wainwright didn't include this fell in his list, it's a lovely top with great views and some little tarns to add interest to the summit area, quiet too. I continued over Crinkle Crags and descended from Three Tarns. On the way down I found some aeroplane wreckage by the upper reaches of Lingcove Beck.

A bit of a different route up Grike and down Crag Fell

It didn't cloud over at all today and I almost wished I'd planned a longer/higher walk but I enjoyed this one for the new routes I explored. My route was Bleach Green Cottages at Ennerdale Water, Ben Gill, Grike, Crag Fell, Disused Mines, Red Beck, Anglers Crag, Bleach Green Cottages.

My route was Greendale, Middle Fell, Seatallan, Buckbarrow, Joss Naylor's Cairn, Greendale Gill, Greendale. Unfortunately it clouded over before I was expecting and I ended up in mist on Seatallan.

The Packwoman's Grave, Allen Crags & Rossett Pike

The main purpose of this walk was to find The Packwoman’s Grave (Wainwright Southern Fells, Rossett Pike 4). I’ve walked the path by Rossett Gill several times over the years but never taken the time to look for this site before. I’d seen photos of the grave on David Hall and Andrew Leaney’s websites and a couple of others. It’s unmistakeable when you see it, the stone at the head is very distinctive and thankfully the stones seem to be pretty much undisturbed, the base stones being quite well embedded in the ground. I’ve followed the tradition of only posting photos which don’t show the exact location. I’d only intended to climb to Rossett Pike but as I found the grave much more easily than expected I did and out and back to Allen Crags and then on to Rossett Pike. I descended to Buck Pike and followed a path which I’ve not used before under Black Crags and down to the Stake Pass path.

Eagle Crag & Sergeant's Crag with Angie

On Saturday I met up with Angie in Stonethwaite. Circumstances decreed a short walk and Angie's chosen tops were Eagle and Sergeant's Crag. She decided we should give the route up the front of Eagle Crag a go. We were blessed with good weather which was a real treat for Angie as normally the wind and rain set in when she's up here! A splendid walk which I very much enjoyed, thanks Angie.

Pen, my final Birkett top, plus Scafell Pike

I started my walk from Brotherilkeld in Eskdale, ascended the Cowcove zigzags and on into upper Eskdale. I accessed Pen from Little Narrowcove. The cove is a wonderful place with dramatic rock scenery all around, and Pen is a great place to linger with it’s fine views and curious rocks. I then took the south-east ridge route to Scafell Pike. Up until then I’d only met one person, a fell runner, but as you can imagine on a Bank Holiday weekend it was a busy scene on the Pike, much different to the two previous occasions I’ve been there when I’ve had the place to myself for a while. Beating a hasty retreat from the crowds I made my way over to Mickledore and down to Cam Spout and the peace of Eskdale. Rather than returning the way I’d come I crossed the River Esk and Great Moss to descend to Lingcove Bridge and so back to Brotherilkeld. A wonderful walk to end my Birkett Round, pleased I saved it til last.

Ponsonby Fell, Swainson Knott & 'Sampson's Bratfull' on Stockdale Moor

I went to Blengdale near Gosforth and walked three more Birkett tops which gave rather different views of some western fells. As I was in the vicinity I then went in search of 'Sampson's Bratfull' on Stockdale Moor. A walk in an unfrequented area and much more enjoyable than I was expecting.

The Bannisdale Horseshoe

I decided to crack on with my Birkett quest today but I took Wainwright's longer route for this walk as I didn't fancy driving up the narrow road to Dryhowe Bridge. The Bannisdale Horseshoe in the Shap Fells is no longer the obstacle course it apparently used to be with some new stiles added. In some places the tussocky grass has been smoothed by farmer's quad bike tracks but the bogs remain, although they weren't too bad at all on this occasion. About 11 miles.

Crag Fell, Iron Crag, Caw Fell, Haycock

On Saturday I had a walk from Ennerdale Water. Parking at Bleach Green Cottages I ascended Crag Fell and then followed the beautifully constructed Ennerdale Fence wall to find the aeroplane wreckage on Iron Crag which I missed last time I was there. Next it was on to Caw Fell and Haycock. I took a new descent route for me down to Tewit How and Lingmell. The walk ended with a stroll along the Ennerdale Water southern shore...a blissful 12 miles.

A good choice for this morning's walk as the boggy sections were more frozen than I was expecting. I took the usual route as far as Tarn Crag and then descended by a different, unfrequented route (thanks to Mr Wainwright), which made a rather pleasant change from the descent by Gatescarth Pass.

Today I resumed my quest for the Birkett tops after a break over the winter. The Crookdale Horseshoe doesn't exactly have a fantastic reputation but I loved it, fine moorland walking on a perfect day with frozen ground underfoot...I arrived back at the car with dry boots!!

Helm Crag to Tarn Crag - A Far Easedale Round

The sun has got his hat on at long last! I had a fine walk today, mostly in sunshine although it was still quite windy in the morning. I ascended Helm Crag and walked along the ridge to Calf Crag. After following a path for a short while I picked a more or less pathless way over to the Tarn Crag ridge. I love it above Tarn Crag, I hardly ever seem to see anyone up there. I suppose you could call the walk a Far Easedale Round.

High Seat, Bleaberry Fell and Walla Crag

A super walk in the snow on the central ridge. I parked at the bottom of the Watendlath Road and took a new route for me up High Seat by Barrow Beck and Dodd. It was clear to the north west but when I arrived on Dodd I could see the central ridge was cloaked in mist. I hoped it would clear so I continued on, it was a handy that there were a few footprints in the snow to follow. Inspite of the mist it was very bright up there in the snow with the sun trying to come through. On High Seat I had one of those magical moments where the mist clears to reveal the views! It was really hard going on the way to Bleaberry Fell in the quite deep, still soft snow, but fortunately all bogs were obliterated. It was now a beautiful afternoon so from Bleaberry Fell I thought I may as well add Walla Crag to the outing.

Arthur's Pike, Bonscale Pike & Loadpot Hill

Parking at Roehead just above Pooley Bridge I headed up into the snow on Arthur's Pike, Bonscale Pike and Loadpot Hill. There were a few light showers in the morning and a cold wind but also some sunshine. The soft snow was very tiring to walk in, my legs were pretty tired when I got back!

A short walk to Green Hill on Gowbarrow Fell

It was great to see Roger and Ann this morning when they called in for a coffee on the way to the printers. After they went a little watery sunshine enticed me to pack my rucsac and head down toward Ullswater. Unfortunately it started snowing and then raining, but I waited for half an hour for a clearance and set off for Green Hill. I'd intended to go on to Gowbarrow but darkening skies prompted a change of plan so I cut the walk short and returned the way I came. It was a fantastic feeling to enjoy my first snowy walk of the winter :o)

Parking in Mosedale I took an off path route to Carrock Fell which I've used before, then I walked over to High Pike and down to Lingy Hut. After a short break I decided to walk up to Knott even though the top was initially covered in mist, then I descended over Coomb Height and down the steep nose back to Mosedale.

High Spy & Dale Head via Nitting Haws

The Nitting Haws route has been on my to do list for a while and what better time to be in Borrowdale than autumn. I set off from Grange and climbed to High Spy then on to Dale Head. I descended in the direction of Honister and about half way down took a little used path back to the top of Rigg Head Quarries and so back to Grange. A bit more sunshine to illuminate the leaves would have been good but can't complain, it was a lovely day.

Scafell & Slight Side

Last year on 16th October 2010 I completed my second and solo round of Wainwright Fells and on 15th October 2011 I completed my third round, rather neatly I thought within the year, although it was never my original intention to do this. I've used different routes this time around, including some lovely ones inspired by searching out Birkett tops. On this walk I used the Terrace Route from Wha House for ascent so I could finish on Scafell. Instead of desecending by Foxes Tarn which I did last time I retraced my steps to Long Green to try the unfrequented Camspout Crag ridge to descend to the top of Cam Spout, a fine route which I'd definitely return to. I returned to Wha House via Cam Spout and the Cowcove zig zags. I couldn't have wished for a better day.

Scafell Pike

What a difference a week can make in the weather! It was windy as I set off from Seathwaite with my hat, gloves and Paramo jacket at the ready, they were needed! I took the straightforward route up the Corridor Route, which I haven't walked in about 20 years, and back down Grains Gill. What you can't see from the photos was the strength of the wind up there, luckily not so bad that I couldn't stand up or I would have turned back. All was quiet at the summit and I was pleased to see hardly any litter, someone must go up there and clear it all, many thanks to them whoever they may be.

I returned to Honister the next day to go up Kirk Fell but it was such a beautiful morning that I decided to revisit Great Gable via Green Gable. Probably because I was quite early I had the place to myself! I then took the steep descent to Beck Head and went up Kirk Fell visiting both summits and returned to Honister via Moses Trod.

The Screes

I parked at Brackenclose on a sunny morning and walked up Illgill Head and Whin Rigg. The forecast was for windy conditions on the fells but it wasn't too bad so I took the path along the edge with good views down on Wast Water and hazy views over the fells. After descending by Greathall Gill I took the shore path along the screes. I've walked it before although a long time ago and it was as I remembered, no where near as itintimidating as it looks from the other side, but quite tiring over the scree sections. The shore path was sheltered from the wind and it was really warm for the time of year. Fabulous views and very quiet, a day to remember.
