UK Day 16 and 17 - Loch Ness to Glasgow and Home

Our last day was a scenic drive from Tulloch Castle down to the airport in Glasgow.

UK Day 15 - Cromarty

We didn't have a specific plan for day 15, but eventually decided on doing a dolphin watching boat tour. To kill time on the way to catch the boat, we stopped at the beach in Fortrose, where we saw a bunch of dolphins playing just off-shore. We had lunch in Cromarty, and did a bit of sight-seeing before the tour, on which we saw a lot of stuff, but no dolphins. We had supper in Nairn, and then headed back to Tulloch Castle.

UK Day 14 - Edinburgh Castle, The Falkirk Wheel & Tulloch Castle

Day 14 we spent the morning and early afternoon at Edinburgh castle, and then started northish towards Dingwall. We stopped and took a ride on the Falkirk wheel, and had a brief photo stop in Cairngorms National Park. We stopped for supper in Newtonmore, and then eventually arrived at Tulloch Castle for the night.

UK Day 13 - Bamburgh Castle, Holy Island & Edinburgh

Day 13 we stopped briefly at Warkworth Castle, tried (but mostly failed) to see Alnwick Castle, hung out on the beach near Bamburgh Castle, and then spent a few hours on Holy Island. We ended up in Edinburgh at the end of the day, saw part of the Royal Mile, and ate some haggis.

UK Day 12 - Bolton Abbey, Yorkshire Dales, Hadrian's Wall & Newcastle-Upon-Tyne

Day 12 started with a visit to Bolton Abbey, followed by a long and winding drive through the Yorkshire Dales. We stopped for lunch at the Tan Hill Inn, the highest inn in England. Our final stop was Houseteads fort on Hadrian's wall, which was closing when we got there but we still had a look around before heading to Newcastle-upon-Tyne and our hotel in Whitley Bay.

UK Day 11 - York

We spent day 11 in York, first at York Minster, then visiting the Shambles, the Jorvik Viking Museum and York Dungeon. Later in the evening we met up with Phil and Helen for dinner (and lots of wine) at Zizzi's.

UK Day 10 - London to Leeds

Day 10 we got up early enough to wander around London a little bit before catching our train up to Leeds to find Ryan and Sandra. There we met Ryan's cousin Steph and her husband Mark, who took us to the West Indian Festival for a bit, followed by a trip to the pub. After that we visited Ryan's grandma for a bit before finishing off at another pub.

UK Day 9 - London

Day 9 Cressa and I spent the whole day touring London. We started with a boat trip from Westminster to the Tower of London, where we spent a few hours. Then we headed to Canary Wharf for some shopping, and then Greenwich where we visited the Royal Observatory and Maritime Museum. Finally we took a trip on the Eye before going back to the hotel and passing out from exhaustion.

UK Day 8 - Amberley & London

I got up early to go back to Rodborough Common to get some pictures as the sun was coming up, before packing up and leaving the cottage. Ryan and Sandra dropped us off at Uxbridge station before heading up to visit Ryan's family in Leeds while we spent a couple days in London. Cressa and I found our hotel and did a quick tour around Westminster before meeting up with John, Margaret, Ainsley and Pauline. We did a whirlwind tour of London before dinner at Byron's (a burger place) followed by beers at the Princess Louise (a very cool pub).

UK Day 7 - Amberley

Friday we decided to spend the day in Amberley itself. Later in the afternoon we drove to nearby Rodborough Common to try and find Rodborough Fort. Afterwards we stopped for some ice cream, and then headed to the Black Horse Inn for beers and supper.

UK Day 6 - Wales

We ended up having to take a detour off the route I'd planned for day 6, but it took us near Clearwell Caves, which had been something that had been cut earlier, so we ended up stopping there first. Then we crossed the Welsh border and drove up the Wye valley, stopping at some scenic lookouts, and then Tinturn Abbey. We got stuck in a traffic jam in Monmouth which ate up a lot of time, but we managed to squeeze a visit to Caerphilly Castle in before heading to Swansea for a beer festival.

UK Day 5 - Stonehenge & Bath

Day 5 was the rainiest day we had and the waterproof camera got a lot of use. We got poured on at Stonehenge, and then headed to Bath where we went to the Roman Baths and Sally Lunn's House for cream tea before heading back to Amberley and having dinner at the inn.

UK Day 4 - Winchester & Portsmouth & The New Forest

Day 4 started out at Winchester Cathedral, followed by the Historic Dockyards at Portsmouth. The main attraction there was HMS Victory, but we also spent a fair amount of time in the Mary Rose exhibit. After that we had a scenic drive back through the New Forest.

UK Day 3 - The Cotswolds & Stratford-on-Avon

Day 3 was a trip through the Cotswolds. We tried to go to the Cirencester Market, but either missed most of it, or it was just a really boring market. We spent most of the morning walking through Cirencester, before heading to Bourton-on-the-Water. There we had lunch by the river, and visited the model railway exhibition. Next up was Broadway Tower, but it was so foggy it took us a long time to find it. Finally, we got to Stratford, had fish and chips at The Legacy Falcon, and then saw King Lear performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company in the Courtyard Theatre.

UK Day 2 - Blenheim Palace & Oxford

The first half of Day 2 sort of got wasted while we were lost in Swindon, looking for SIM cards for our phones. Once we escaped, we visited Blenheim Palace (where Winston Churchill was born), and then did a whirlwind tour of Oxford.

UK Day 1 - Arrival

Day 1 was mostly just getting settled in. We picked up our rental car and drove to our cottage in Amberley, then ventured out to get groceries. We sort of got lost (and really hungry) but eventually had supper at a pub not too far from home.
