Antarctic Adventure: The Journey Begins

Our journey begins in Ushuaia, "the bay that reaches into the west". I arrived the day before we sailed, and I met my fellow passengers at Hotel Los Niros. The next morning we put our bags in the lobby and boarded a bus to the National Park. We spent the late morning and early afternoon in the late summer sun exploring Patagonia.

Prion Island

We have sailed around most of South Georgia, and we are making one last landing before we head westward toward the Falkland Islands. The folks from Global Boardwalks were busy making the nesting sites of Giant Petrels and Wandering Albatrosses accessible to, and safe from, wandering tourists.

Gold Harbour

We landed at Gold Harbour on March 3. The place was full of life. Fur seals ran along the beach. Elephant Seals wallowed placidly in the sand as they worked on growing next winter's fur coats. Gentoo Penguins, King Penguins and assorted shore birds were everywhere. This was our first encounter with a King Penguin colony. I think that we were all impressed with the size of the colony and the noise of the birds. It was a wonderful day. Passengers and some of the crew who joined us on shore are pictured here among South Georgia's birds and mammals. A few small panoramas are included in this album. Storm Hope Bay and Base Esperanza

We had a rough time at sea and put into Hope Bay to ride out a storm. Hope Bay shelters Base Esperanza, a year-round Argentine research station. Here is a photographic record of the bridge activity, the dropping of the anchor and of the landing at Base Esperanza

Auroras

Defying frostbite, cold batteries and the dreaded red lights of the vortec, we journeyed to the hillside to watch the northern lights. It was February 4, 2008 around midnight. Michelle borrowed Mary's and Maria Berg covered 2 hours at work for her. Michele, Elaine, Ron and I were really cold with that -70F windchill, but it was a very good night.
