Bellport

These are a few photos from my father's hometown of Bellport, NY. The pictures were taken in and around the home in which he and his siblings were raised. The party captured in a couple of the photos was thrown to celebrate the life of my G-ma, the most dignified of ladies.

Yacuiba is a border town (with Argentina) approximately one hour south of Villa Montes and six to seven hours northeast of Salta.

Villa Montes

Villa Montes is a large-ish town an hour north of Yacuiba and six or seven hours south of Santa Cruz. While I was in the area the town played host to a large parade of local communities for what is known as the Dia del Chaco, a holiday celebrating the victory of Bolivia over Paraguary in the Chaco War, which ended in the 1930s (according to people in the area) and gave Bolivia control over most of the Chaco region. Most of the photos of the parade are of the village of Chimeo, which is around 10 km north of Villa Montes.

Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz is a major and wealthy city in Central/Eastern Bolivia. It is a strong political and cultural counterweight to La Paz, the capital. I spent a few days in Santa Cruz, but only in passing. The city offers welcomed ammenities, after time in moral rural areas, but, in and of itself, isn't much to write home about.

Chimeo

Chimeo is a small Guarani village 10 km north of Villa Montes. I was brought here by Jacqueline Brysacz, who is living in Chimeo for two years as a Peace Corps volunteer. My time here was by far the highlight of my trip. The folks here are friendly, welcoming, self-reliant, and seemingly happy.

Samaipata

Samaipata is a hilltop town two hours east of Santa Cruz. Travelling there will bring you through verdant valleys along switchback, cliff-side roads that could make most first timers (which I was) vertiginous. The town was developed by European, mainly German, expats. In addition to a great town center with a restauran selling falafel (!), there are some excellent hiking destinations. Jacqueline and I trekked down from 2,000 km.
