Glorious weather plus opening weekend of the North Cascades plus a full weekend off for Heather, it wasn't hard to decide what to do. We took our time and did a leisurely extended circumnavigation of Liberty Bell and Early Winters in the North Cascades.

To celebrate Leap Day, we did something crazy and drove the long way from Sandpoint, ID to Seattle via Lillooet, BC. A lot of fresh and lonely scenery was observed, a day was spent skiing in Joffre Park, two days skiing at Whistler, and witnessed the wedding of our good friends Adam and Cynnie.

Huangshan (Yellow Mountain), China, September 2011

Huangshan, a mountain range 200 miles east of Shanghai, is a frequent subject of Chinese painting and literature. We spent two days and one night visiting the massif. Without the blasted and bolted on walkways, walking around this vertical mountain would be impossible.

The inspiration for our trip to south central China was the famous karst topography of the Li River. Small mountains coming straight out of the ground like hay stacks. I am a sucker for absurd topography and this region fulfilled.

Longsheng Rice Terraces & Dong Villages, China, September 2011

We flew straight from Shanghai to Guilin. We spent a quick night in town and then took a bus out to the Dragon's Backbone (Longsheng) Rice Terraces. From Ping' An we hiked for an afternoon to Tiantouzhai where we spent the night amidst rice fields. The next morning we hiked out to Dazhai where a prearranged taxi was waiting to take us to Chengyang where we spent a day wandering around a collection of small Dong villages.

St. Andrews Lake and Emerald Ridge, Backpacking, August 2011

Heather and I spent two long days backpacking in a new corner of Mt. Rainier National Park for us. We started off up the Puyallup River valley and took a look at the volcanic formations. We then headed towards St. Andrew's Park and camped above the lake. In the morning we traversed a ridge and then dropped back to the valley and went back up the other side to Emerald Ridge. We returned via Tahoma Creek.

We've had a busy summer, but David and Megan and I found the time (Heather had to work) to go for a long two-day backpacking trip to Tank Lakes in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. No stars or aurora borealis was seen, but plenty of other beautiful sights were seen.

Excelsior Peak, Hike, July 2011

Another beautiful weekend in the mountains. We braved deep snow and camped on top of Excelsior Peak for views from Baker to Canada. The next morning we continued along High Divide to Welcome Pass and down where we found the bicycles we stashed in the woods. From there we cycled 542 back to the Excelsior Peak trail head.

Cascadian Couloir, Mt. Stuart, Ski Tour, June 2011

Taking advantage of the warmest and sunniest day of the year thus far, Eric and I made a one-day ski attempt of the Cascadian Couloir of Mt. Stuart. We thought stability would force us to turn around but things were more stable than we expected and we completed the trip, 7,800 vertical feet and 12.5 miles later.

David and Adam and I had been planning a four day ski trip for some time. Avalanche and weather conditions in Washington were poor, so we headed north to British Columbia, north of Pemberton. We hunkered down in the Duffey Lake region and skied as much of the late season powder as we could.

We left Nepal a little slower than we came. We had 18 hours in Pokhara and 18 hours in Kathmandu. Mostly we showered and shopped. From Kathmandu we also went for a mountain flight, from which we saw Mt. Everest.

Our fifth through eighth days were spent leaving the Annapurna Sanctuary. We took a different route out and detoured to the view point at Poon Hill to watch sunrise over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Our last day was a 7,500 foot descent from Poon Hill to Nayapul

Annapurna Sanctuary, Annapurna Base Camp, Days 4-5, 2011

Our third and fourth days were spent in the alpine of the Annapurna Sanctuary. We made it to Annapurna Base Camp shortly before it clouded up. We went back and spent the night at Machhapuchhre Base Camp where it snowed nearly 8 inches. In the morning under clear skies we went back to ABC for sunrise.

An amazing confluence of premium snow, perfectly clear skis, a full moon, and Heather having the weekend off made for some epic skiing by Lake Ann in the Baker back country. A few laps at midnight by moonlight were unbelievable. It is only one day since the trip and I already doubt the memories.

Clear skies plus a full moon made for a unique opportunity. David and I climbed to the highest point of the Goat Rocks, Gilbert Peak, and arrived shortly before sunset. We watched moonrise and then headed down 2500 ft back to camp under moon light, taking lots of night pictures along the way.

Icicle Ridge Traverse, Hike, September 2010

Heather was working and the western weather was definitely bad, so I went east. I tried Grindstone Mountain but didn't check trip reports, the road was closed. So I punted and went up 4th of July Creek instead. I got to the top, got some rime on my fingers while taking pictures of rime, and then decided to keep walking on the ridge all the way back to Leavenworth. 20 miles and 5600 feet later, some friendly climbers then drove me back to the trail head. Thanks.

Glacier Peak Descent, Backpacking, August 2010

While summiting Glacier Peak was great, the real treat was the amazing eye candy. Flowers, lakes, waterfalls, fields, sunsets, mountains, and alpenglow. It occurred to us that we might never make it back. Instead, search-and-rescue would find us in the flower fields with our heads down taking pictures. Fortunately my SD cards filled up and batteries ran out, otherwise I don't think we would have ever made it back.

Quandary Peak, Ski Tour, 2009

Heather and I went to Colorado for Thanksgiving weekend. For my birthday the day before I decided I wanted to ski a 14,000 peak. Quandary Peak was our goal. There was only 8 inches of snow in the deep places, the wind was howling, and we destroyed the bases of our skis. Nevertheless we made some turns, had some great views, got some good exercise, and I had an awesome birthday.

Tom and David and I had been planning a snow camping trip for well over a half a year. We patiently waited until the most perfect weekend arrived. We then found the most perfect location in all of Washington to build a snow campsite.

Silvreta Traverse, Alps, Ski Tour, 2008

For spring break of 2008 Heather and I went to the Alps and met Chris and did a 6 day hut-to-hut ski tour. The tour got shortened to 4 days due to blizzard, but it was an amazing time, nevertheless. The weather improved by the end of our stay for a great day-tour on our last day.

Australia IV and V, Melbourne, 2008

What I think was my last trip to Australia I went to Brisbane and then Melbourne. I found time to make a trip to the Grampians National Park and do some hiking.

Jackson Hole, WY, Skiing, 2008

After a 10 day business trip I flew to Jackson Hole and met Heather, Ty, and Andy who had driven there. The entire west coast was having epic snow, and Jackson was no different. We had two days of, what locals called, some of the best skiing ever in Jackson. We will be back, don't you worry.
