Flood Repairs 2007

Hundreds of volunteers helped Mount Rainier National Park rebuild trails, campgrounds, and other infrastructure damaged or destroyed by the flood of November 2006. The work was accomplished in part through a partnership with the Student Conservation Association, which created a "Mount Rainier Recovery Corps" to recruit, train, and supervise an army of public volunteers.

Flood Repairs 2008

In 2008, more than 1,800 volunteers contributed to Mount Rainier National Park. Many of them participated in the second year of repairs following the devastating floods of November 2006. They built and rebuilt trails, helped with revegetation efforts, restored campgrounds, and assisted with more than a hundred projects in all, all over the park. Most did so under the leadership of the Mount Rainier Recovery Corps, an initiative by the Student Conservation Association. Hundreds more served under the direction of the Washington Trails Association or the Mount Rainier National Park Associates.

International Volunteers

A small but important number of international volunteers serve at Mount Rainier National Park every year. "IVIP's" must meet special requirements set by the State Department, but they receive invaluable experiences and enrich the experiences of park staff and other volunteers. Many of our international volunteers participate through the Japan Volunteers-in-Parks Association, which first brought teams of volunteers to Mount Rainier from Waseda University in Tokyo in 1995.

Living History

Every year, staff and volunteers at Mount Rainier present a special program called "Shadows of the Past," in which costumed interpreters speak to visitors by lantern-light along the Trail of the Shadows at Longmire. The park hopes to expand this popular program, with the help of volunteers, into something that can be offered to the public more often.

National Trails Day 2008

On National Trails Day, June 7, 2008, seventy volunteers helped with six different trails projects on the south side of Mount Rainier National Park, under the direction of the Student Conservation Association's Mount Rainier Recovery Corps. Meanwhile, two groups helped with trail projects at Carbon River, under the leadership of the Washington Trails Association. These pictures are from the Longmire-based groups.

Seed Collection

An important part of our revegetation efforts at Mount Rainier is collecting seeds to grow in the park's greenhouse. Seeds are gathered at sites near where the seedlings will ultimately be planted, to preserve local genetic populations.

Sherpa Projects

Sometimes the most helpful thing volunteers can do is simply to carry supplies into the backcountry for trail or backcountry maintenance projects. This saves Mount Rainier National Park thousands of dollars in helicopter fees, reduces noise in the wilderness, and gives the volunteers a good workout in a beautiful setting!

Youth Volunteer Programs

Mount Rainier sponsors or works with several youth volunteer programs, including the Student Conservation Association's Conservation Leadership Corps, which recruits high school students from local urban populations, and the Northwest Youth Corps. The park also hires local students through the Youth Conservation Corps program.

And many other duties!

Volunteers help in every conceivable way at Mount Rainier National Park--sometimes in ways that don't fit easy categories. They install wayside exhibits. They serve as foreign language translators. They help develop management planning documents. They paint pictures and murals for park offices. Volunteers help in every aspect of the stewardship of Mount Rainier!
