The road and countryside as we traveled northeast from Celestino. This is a popular destination for fishing and bird hunting. We saw many signs for guided trips.
Along the way be passed many small villages. This one was very clean, with painted white rocks lining all the roads.
Mexico has countless roadside shrines. This one was particularly colorful, and in what seemed to be the middle of nowhere! More about THAT later.
As we wound into the hils, this was the vista from that roadside shrine. It is a beautiful region. Mexico does have a litter problem as seen in a few pics in this album.
Here's the truck parked long the road. The drive from the campground to Cosala took about 1.5 hours.
This is the entry into the town. There is only one road in and one road out of the town.
The streets are very narrow with such colorful houses and buildings!
We drove around for a while looking for a parking place. This is one of the side streets we went down. We are several blocks from the central plaza here.
Another side street we went down but it dead ended.
We parked about one block from the plaza. I'm not sure if you can see but the building says 1810 - 2008. It's a very old town with many original buildings and cobblestone or brick streets. Very charming!
Taken of the church from the far side of the plaza
The wide sidewalk we walked down to get to the central plaza.
Taken from the plaza looking down one of the side streets.
I love old churches.
Inside the church.
So pretty!
There was a painter there doing the ceiling.
There is a wide upper veranda around the church, you can see it in the shot from the street, and I took the next several pics from up there as it was a great vantage point. This is looking down onto the street to the side and behind the church.
Looking out front and down to the plaza. Notice John.
I LOVE the colorful buildings! I just couldn't capture how charming it is!
This little grocery store is across from the plaza. The sign said "Since 1939"
These are the back steps up to the church.
The sidewalk with little food stands.
Store across from where we parked.
Hotel across from our parking spot.
When we left town, we pulled into a gas station up on a hill to take this shot. I'd love to go back to this town to explore more. It's not very wheelchair friendly though. Did you notice the high curbs in some of the pics?
Burrow grazing at the gas station. Mexico is covered with free-range livestock !
On our way to Cosala I'd noticed this memorial shrine but the stairs wound up a steep hill and there was no where to park on the windy road. We did stop on our way down the hill.
I'm about 1/2 way up looking down at the road.
Looking up from 1/2 way.
The shrine
Looking down at the truck
A close up of the shrine.
Looking down from the top. On the way down I counted 192 steps!
At a wide spot in the road, we stopped to let Gracie out for a bit. It was amazing how many cow bells we heard. The brush was so tall and thick we couldn't see any of them from the road. Without stopping, we would have never known!
