Dhanaulti

Dhanaulti (also called Dhanolti or Dhanolty) is about 122km from Haridwar via Chamba. The road after Chamba winds up through pine forests and drive is very enjoyable. Road is good too. The place (Dhanaulti) is especially good for kids now a days as recently two Eco Parks have been developed which have lot of recreational equipment such as the see-saw, merry-go-round, swingset, slide, etc. There are many enjoyable walking trails too.

Kumbh Mela, Haridwar 14.4.2010 (last Shahi Snan)

The largest gathering of people for a religious purpose (a dip in holy Ganges) in the world. The Sadhus and Sanyasis are given preference for the Shahi Snan. The other pilgrims can bathe only after the ascetics have taken the holy dip.?

Ukhimath & Chopta (1-4.4.10)

Ukhimath (or Okhmath) is around 200 km from Haridwar. This is the winter seat of Lord Kedarnath and worship is done here during the winters when the temples of Kedarnath remain closed.Elevation - 1311 mts.

2010-02-07 Kumbh Peshwai Niranjini Akahara

Akhara processions during the Kumbh have great public attraction. Saints of different Akharas gather at one point and proceed to their camps (near Har-ki-Pauri) on vehicles, horses, elephants and chariots, carrying 30ft long dharma dhvaja. They are accompanied by bands and jhankies. These processions are called Peshwai and about 10 such processions are organised during the Kumbh.

Khirsu Landscapes

Haridwar to Khirsu (Altitude - 1700m, 180Km from Haridwar, A small hemlet). The journey is enjoyable with natural splendor all around. One should take the route of Haridwar-Kotdwar-Lansdown-Buakhal-Khirsu. There is a GMVN guest house with good rooms. If lucky (no clouds/fog), you will be sipping morning tea under the spell of snow peaks from Guest House lawn :-). The return journy via Pauri -Devprayag was not so much enjoyable (broken roads and only intial 30-40Km are worth stopping/photographing)
