When we came down to Cadboro Beach on Saturday morning, we saw Dubside, the Master of Greenland rolling techniques, teaching local kayakers some of his tricks.
Getting our boats ready. Ian was very pleased that he could play in a Nordkapp (thanks to Sandra, Nick's girlfriend, for that!). I used the plastic yellow kayak, which was a good thing as they are more robust ;)
Ian in his element.
Ahem, forgot something in the car ...
It was a beautiful day and one can see the Olympic peninsula in the background. Gorgeous.
This was a way, Nick wanted to make sure we had to practice some rescues, but we managed, to kiss our bows (front of the boats) and climb back into the cockpit without falling into the water. It was a good balancing practice.
Now, Ian wants me to put this photo on Facebook as my profile picture - hmm, I'll have to think about this....
How graceful. Thanks Nick!
This was the 360 degree turn in the cockpit.
Ditto.
Hey, this is quite comfy.
Hehe, I was quite pleased with this.
So, where are the juggling balls?
Aeh, not quite sure what this is? In Ian's defence, the Nordkapp is MUCH tippier than my Capella.
This is going to be a T-rescue.
I'm on the stern (back of the boat), pressing down, while Ian is lifting the bow in order to empty the water out of the boat and to flip it over.
Once our boats are parallel, I get my upper body over both of the boat.s
Like this.
Then I put the legs into the cockpit. Once my bottom is above the seat, I turn around and get into the cockpit completely. Easy!
This is another T-rescue. Me pusing down on the stern. And yes, you are allowed to laugh at my silly hat as much as I did myself. But, it kept me warm :)
On the second day, we spent 3 hours talking about charts, tides and currents. Kelly joined us for that and afterwards, she took off in her inflatable.
There was a huge halo visible today.
Here we are in a kelp bed. Pretty cool stuff.
Ian is rolling.
Jen is starting to stand up.
Uh - oh ...
Ian tried to stand up too ...
Me too, and I fell into the water too, I'm coming up to my 2nd attempt already.
Jen is having fun!
Not quite as relaxed as the day before.
Yeah Jen!
Victory.
Beautiful.
Look how stable Jen is - 4 photos long.
Oh dear, naughty Nordkapp.
There seems to be a common feature here? Is this the new way to use a kayak?
Jen is doing the bow kiss.
Now, this is enthusiasm.
Awesome.
Jen made friends with the bow of her boat and didn't want to move back anymore.
Now it's time for Ian and me to do some bow kissing.
Oh, real kissing is much better than kissing bows ;)
Ua, I think this is when it made a big splash and Ian went into the water.
I'm coming to help.
Jen is in at the same time.
Me doing a T-rescue.
After a bit of cool rolling, and quite a bit of crap rolling, I decided I had enough and got out.
Jen did some more rolling in the Nordkapp as her bath tub is a bit trickier to roll.
Shiney boat!
