A Privy Party was scheduled to perform maintenance on two privies at Springer Mountain.
GATC volunteers gathered at a parking lot about 1 mile from the first privy.
Pat had prepared hearty treats and hot chocolate to give the volunteers some energy.
Volunteers took a few minutes to greet each other and socialize.
And then they selected an assortment of tools for the job.
Many volunteers made the work load light.
We saw the first icicles of the season.
Parts of the trail were extremely icy.
It was a good think we had the pick axes with us.
This volunteer team assessed the first privy.
Even though the waste was well composted, the volunteers wore appropriate safety protection.
The compost was shoveled into buckets and carried to another site.
This volunteer team had prepared this site to accept the compost.
Once the compost was deposited,
It was spread around.
Trash items were removed that would not decompose.
Then the compost was spread around.
Finally, a top layer was added so that no trace could be seen.
Another volunteer team worked on the second privy.
Here is the shelter near the privy.
The second privy was disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled, just like the first privy.
A new hand rail was cut for the stairs.
Volunteers seemed to be enjoying the day.
