ACCESS Dinner with young diplomats from the Embassy of the Republic of China

More than two dozen members of ACCESS DC and young diplomats from the Embassy of the Republic of China met for dinner and dialogue on November 10th at Zaytinya restaurant in Washington, DC. The event was organized by ACCESS DC and AJC's Asia Pacific Institute. The goal of the evening was for young diplomats and young Jewish professionals to talk one-on-one and develop relationships for future dialogue. This event was sponsored by a generous grant from the Myron Zimmerman Foundation.

18th Annual Ambassadors' Seder

On March 15, diplomats from over fifty countries, including many ambassadors, joined AJC leadership and distinguished guests at Adas Israel Congregation to celebrate Passover at AJC Washington’s 18th Annual Ambassadors’ Seder. The Seder incorporated texts, customs and foods representing Jewish communities from around the world. Ambassador of Haiti to the U.S., H.E. Raymond Joseph delivered remarks on the international response following the devastating earthquake that struck the island nation in January, highlighting in particular Israel’s tremendous humanitarian assistance and relief efforts during the crisis. For nearly two decades, the Ambassadors’ Seder has served as the preeminent event providing Jewish community leaders the opportunity to engage with DC-based diplomats at a Passover Seder.

AJC Judge Learned Hand Award Dinner 2010

On March 4, Simeon M. Kriesberg, AJC Washington Region Executive Officer and partner at Mayer Brown LLP, received the 2010 Judge Learned Hand Award. Named for the legendary US judge and legal philosopher, the award is given annually to a member of the legal profession who has combined extraordinary professional accomplishments with distinguished community service. Selected by a committee of previous awardees, Simeon received this honor for his more than three decades of commitment to building bridges among people of different faiths, races and backgrounds. He has been an active participant and supporter of Jewish Civic and charitable organizations.

Stand Up for Darfur Concert

On Tuesday, October 22, the Washington Chapter co-sponsored Stand Up for Darfur, an interfaith concert to benefit advocacy and humanitarian relief efforts on the ground in Darfur. The concert raised over $25,000, was widely-attended by a diverse audience, and featured performances by Drumtalk39 and Step Afrika and remarks from Rabbi Charles Feinberg of Adas Israel Congregation, Reverend Kimberly Barnes of Metropolitan AME Church, and Zainab Al-Zuwaij of the American Islamic Congress.

Ambassadorial Luncheon with His Excellency Sudjadnan Parnohadiningrat of Indonesia

On Thursday, August 30, the Washington Chapter held an Ambassadorial Luncheon with His Excellency Sudjadnan Parnohadiningrat of Indonesia. The audience of approximately sixty people included AJC lay and professional leadership, representatives from the Israeli Embassy and the US-Indonesia Society. The Ambassador discussed Indonesia’s demography, current political composition and challenges, efforts to combat terrorism, and role in the region and the world. The Ambassador fielded a number of questions from the audience, including questions about Indonesia’s voting record in the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly and Indonesia’s future relations with Israel.

Breakfast with Mr. Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury

On Wednesday, August 1, the Washington Chapter hosted a special private breakfast with Mr. Salah Uddin Shoaib Choudhury. As a result of his writings concerning the rise of radicalism in Bangladesh and his belief in interfaith dialogue, Choudhury, editor of the Weekly Blitz, a major English-language weekly in Bangladesh, was arrested and imprisoned when he attempted to travel to Israel, in 2003, to attend a conference on peaceful coexistence. He is being tried in Bangladesh on charges of treason and insulting Islam. His newspaper offices have been bombed and he has been targeted with death threats. Mr. Choudhury was granted permission by the Bangladeshi courts to travel to the United States, despite the fact that he is currently on trial for sedition, punishable by death in Bangladesh.

The Jewish Connection to Singapore

On Thursday, July 19, the Contemporary Jewish Life committee held a preparatory, working dinner to discuss the Jewish Connection to Singapore with Jim Busis, Directos of AJC's Asia and Pacific Rim Institute. The event, held at the Malaysia Kopitiam Restaurant was in preparation of the Celebration of Friendship Event which took place at the Embassy of Singapore on July 25.

Dinner with His Excellency Rastislav Kacer, Ambassador from the Slovak Republic to the United States

On July 11, Jerry Ostrov and Bobi Baruch hosted an intimate dinner with His Excellency Rastislav Kacer, Ambassador from the Slovak Republic to the United States. Ambassador Kacer thanked AJC for playing an integral role in mending European divisions in the wake of World War II, and spoke about the current challenges to Europe and to Slovakia in particular. The group was joined by Slovakian Deputy Chief of Mission, Andrej Droba, and Political Counselor, Roman Mockovcak, as well as members of the Washington Chapter Board and Guy Billauer, Associate Director of AJC’s Office of International Jewish Affairs.

Breakfast with Hindu guruji

On July 11, a small gorup of AJC members had the unique opportunity to meet with Hindu guruji, Rev. Sri Sri Sri ViswaYogi Viswamji Maharaj along with a small group of Indian-American community members. Rev. Guruji Viswamji established his ministry of Universal Integration and Peace in Guntar, India where he built the world's first temple of Universal Integration which proclaims that all religions are equal paths to realizing the one and only God. His central message was to focus on basic human values, so that we may build bridges of understanding among different religions and cultures and thus foster a universal spirit of brotherhood.

Finding Voices of Moderation: Muslim-Jewish Dialogue

On Sunday, June 10, the Washington Chapter cosponsored an event entitled “Finding Voices of Moderation: Muslim-Jewish Dialogue” with the Montgomery County Muslim Council. Over 90 people came together to dialogue about the importance of elevating the voices of moderation and about ways in which we can further Muslim-Jewish relations. Following presentations by Mr. Alexander Kronemer, a documentary filmmaker focusing on religious diversity, Islam and cross-cultural understanding, and Rabbi Jack Moline, Vice-Chair of the Interfaith Alliance, the participants worked in small groups to produce an extensive list of future actions that we can take to encourage moderate voices and to advance understanding between and within our communities.

A View from the Ground: Perspectives of a Female Television Reporter in Iraq

On Tuesday, March 13, the Washington Chapter held a luncheon with Dalia Al-Aqidi. Ms. Al-Aqidi began working for the Baghdad office of AlHurra TV hosting a popular political talk show "AlHurra Presents." She also served as AlHurra's White House correspondent from December 2003 to April 2005 and covered a wide range of issues including President Bush's presidential campaign, the G8 summit, the NATO summit, APEC meetings in Chile and the first military court in Guantanamo Bay. She discussed her experiences of being a femal television reporter and life in Iraq.

AJC joins VACOLAO for Latino Lobby Day

On Monday, February 5, a delegation from AJC's Washington Chapter joined the Virginia Coalition of Latino Organizations (VACOLAO) in Virginia for the second annual Latino Lobby Day. Participants in the Lobby Day urged Virginia legislators to oppose legislation that would make it a crime for charitable organizations to provide services to undocumented persons and to support legislation that would extend in-state tuition benefits to students who meet certain criteria. In addition to individual meetings with legislators, the group was addressed by Governor Tim Kaine and Attorney General Bob McDonnell.

Dinner Program with Mithal Al-Alusi, Member of the Iraqi Parliament

On the evening of Wednesday, January 31st, the Washington chapter hosted a private dinner for Mr. Mithal Al-Alusi, a member of the Iraqi Parliament and Special Envoy of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki to Washington. Mr. Al-Alusi, the recipient of the 2005 AJC Moral Courage Award, spoke candidly about the US presence in Iraq, the reality of relations between Iraq and Israel, and our shared threat of international terrorism. Mr. Al-Alusi was joined by Ms. Dalia Al-Aqidi, who recently served as a correspondent in Baghdad for AL Hurra Middle East Television, and Ms. Yehudit Barsky, the Director of AJC's Division on Middle East and International Terrorism.

Luncheon with Jim Hoagland of The Washington Post

On Tuesday, January 30th, Washington Chapter held a special lunch discussion on Israel and the Middle East with Jim Hoagland, columnist and senior foreign correspondent for The Washington Post. This was the inaugural lunch in a series to which we will invite journalists to engage with AJC Board Members. His twice-weekly columns focus on the major questions and issues facing national security and foreign affairs policymakers, and encompass the views not only of American officials but also of world leaders and thinkers.

A Special reading of America's Table with former U.S. Secretary Norman Mineta

On November 13, the American Jewish Committee Washington Chapter honored former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta at a special breakfast reading of America’s Table® in preparation for Thanksgiving. America’s Table® is an AJC initiative celebrating America’s diversity, recognizing the importance of all Americans, regardless of ethnicity or faith, in creating and perpetuating the our founding ideals of freedom, justice and opportunity for all. Secretary Mineta was profiled in the reader as someone whose life and work exemplify America’s democratic values. At the breakfast, Mineta spoke about his experiences during World War II in a Japanese internment camp in Wyoming. He explained that these circumstances led him to public life in 1962 when he was appointed to the San Jose Human Relations Commission. Secretary Mineta thanked the American Jewish Committee for its work as a human rights organization.
