April Action 2012

Every year for this environmentally themed service event, USF faculty, staff, and students work at several sites in the Bay area to provide urban community gardening, clean-up, planting, and beautification services. April Action provides the USF community with opportunities of service that enrich individual's advancement in creating a more humane and just world. USF Co-Generating Its Way to Sustainability

USF is unique in that much of the energy used on campus is made on campus. A cogeneration plant on lower campus has been in service for more than 25 years and has maintained steady power to the campus many times over the years while the rest of the city fell dark. Following the 1989 earthquake, as the story goes, the campus never lost power and was literally a beacon on the hill for the city.

This inaugural visibility advertising campaign consists of 14 short, provocative headlines that emphasize USF’s commitment to academic excellence, a culture of service, and a passion for social justice, as well as its deep ties to the city of San Francisco. USF Basketball Coach Legend Pete Newell

Pete Newell was appointed USF's head men's basketball coach in 1946. During his four years at USF, Newell compiled a 70-37 record and led the Dons to the 1949 National Invitation Tournament championship.

USF Basketball Legend Bill Cartwright

As a college student Bill Cartwright played basketball at the University of San Francisco in the late 1970's. Graduating as the all-time leading scorer for the Dons, Cartwright averaged 19.1 points and 10.2 rebounds per game. WIth USF, Cartwright went on three trips to the NCAA tournament, including a first round in 1977, and the Sweet Sixteen in 1978 and 1979.

Four Decades of Art Activism: A Richard Kamler Retrospective

How can art be a catalyst for social change? Richard Kamler has been exploring that question for four decades, while teaching and making art at the University of San Francisco and around the world. "Four Decades of Art Activism: A Fishbowl Conversation" - in conjunction with his retrospective at the Thacher Gallery - will discuss exactly how art can be a catalyst for social change. The event takes place at the Intersection for the Arts ans is sponsored by the Thacher Gallery at USF. Here is a sampling from Kamler's wide-ranging, often cataclysmic, art career.

T-Day food drive

On November 21, 2009, volunteers assembled and distributed food baskets to families in the Western Addition neighborhood. The USF community donated more than $8,000 to the Thanksgiving Food Drive.
