Introducing the Pepper Eater to Ethiopia

The Pepper Eater is a new device being developed by CTI volunteers and Stanford University graduates who originally developed the idea during a design course. The Pepper Eater mills dried peppers into higher-value pepper flakes much faster and safer than traditional methods. Traditionally, women in Ethiopia process peppers by hand or with a mortar and pestle. The tiring work leaves their hands covered in hot pepper oil and their eyes, noses, and throats burning from pepper dust in the air. With the Pepper Eater, CTI hopes to provide women with safe and efficient tools so they can earn higher incomes and better support their families.

Making a "profound difference" in Haiti

In the months following the tragic earthquake in January 2010, CTI began collaborating with organizations working in rural Haiti. Though the earthquake was devastating to Port au Prince, communities outside of the capital city were struggling to find food and employment for their current residents, let alone the influx of refugees displaced from the earthquake. Using donations from several organizations, the Haitian Health Foundation (HHF) began purchasing grinders to help families near Jeremie, Haiti support themselves. The grinders, in the words of Bette Gebrian, HHF Director of Public Health: “are making such a profound difference…”

Grain Processing in Senegal

In November and December of 2011, CTI traveled to Senegal to introduce CTI's new grain processing tools to rural farmers. For the first time, mothers saw what may be an end to the cycle of hunger and poverty in their communities—tools that help them double their harvest in a fraction of the time. Their increased yields mean more than additional food on the table, it means the opportunity to earn income, send their kids to school and start businesses.

Nicaragua - Water Chlorination Project

CTI is providing safe drinking water to more than 80,000 people in more than 100 communities in rural Nicaragua. We train the communities to install and maintain affordable water chlorination technology. CTI has set the goal of providing a sustainable source of safe drinking water to 250,000 people by 2014.

Haiti

Following the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti, CTI was contacted by a number of relief agencies looking for manual devices for processing incoming food aid. In February, CTI sent Americas Committee Vice Chair Sam Usem to Haiti to provide technology and support to aid agencies desperately seeking low-tech food processing solutions.

Mali

In December 2009, CTI Executive Director Roger Salway traveled to Mali with OneLab Initiative volunteer, Thom Haubert. Roger and Thom went to Mali to field test CTI's newest device, the pearl millet stripper-thresher-winnower. The trip was a great success; farmers, scientists, and rural villagers were in awe of this new device that has to potential to triple the amount of pearl millet produced.

Ghana - Moringa grinding training

Two CTI volunteers took their second trip to Ghana to train several trainers on the use of the CTI Omega VI grinder. They also introduced the Ewing III grinder (with modifications to accommodate leafy material such as moringa leaves), and the possibility of building a wooden grinder body out of available local hardwoods. Bangladesh - Nutrition Project

CTI volunteers have been working with a Women's Cooperative in Bangladesh (and Lutheran Aid to Medicine in Bangladesh) to make peanut paste with the CTI Omega VI grinder. They sell the peanut paste to supplement the family income.
