AFGHANISTAN - Jaji, Paktia, late August 1984
This was my second visit to Afghanistan, 12 years after the first (from Iran to Herat and Kandahar in March 1972). The first time, over a year before the end of King Zahir's 40-year reign, the country was at peace and a haven for western hippies. This time, in 1984, it had again -- as often happened in earlier times -- been torn by war and foreign invasion for several years. I was to pay brief visits again in 1985 and 1987 -- always in war time. The misery continues over 20 years later...
