Anxiously Awaiting Sprout

Our amazing friends and burgeoning rock-star local photographers Phil & Jenn offered to do a photo shoot of the expectant parents, and we took them up on it on a beautiful day in late December, just shy of the 37-week mark. We chose the downtown area as the setting because of its significance in our early days as a couple. And as you can see, the Camps did a magnificent job of capturing Cathy's beautiful glow and cleaning me up enough to look presentable enough to allow the art of the photos to come out. We had a great time, and hope you enjoy the photos.

Tuscaloosa Friends & Family Baby Shower

Alabama Football 2011

2011 was another magical season for Alabama Football, as the Crimson Tide fielded the nation's top team once again and brought home National Championship #14 with a memorable 21-0 win over the LSU Tigers in the BCS National Championship Game in New Orleans. We followed along through the Tide's championship season, our second in three years.

Alaskan Cruise

To celebrate Doug's retirement, the Shaws & Raineys ventured to the Great Pacific Northwest this summer for an Alaskan cruise, including stops in Juneau, Skagway, the Inside Passage and Victoria, British Columbia. We enjoyed seeing glaciers, whales, mountains, sea and some of the most beautiful country in the world.

St. Croix, USVI

This spring's epic adventure took us to the beautiful Virgin Islands to St. Croix, a U.S. island territory in the Caribbean. St. Croix is world-renowned for beautiful beaches, crystal clear water and great seafood, and it did not disappoint. We stayed on our private island at a hotel reachable only by boat, and enjoyed relaxing on beautiful beaches, exploring the amazing waters by jet ski and kayak, snorkeling off a coral reef and encountering a shark, touring the rain forest and small towns, and dining on fine seafood. It was an amazing week.

Maw's Birthday Weekend

Dodgers vs. Braves 2010

My birthday gift this year from Cathy was a weekend trip to Atlanta for the Dodgers-Braves series. We had a great time exploring the city and watching the Dodgers split two games with the home team, and the rain held off just enough to get in both games in an extra-steamy climate.

Rome, Italy

In Rome we immersed ourselves in both ancient and modern-day Roman culture. Highlights included the iconic Colosseum, the ruins of the Roman Forum, Vatican City (including St. Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel), the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon, the Vittorio Emmanuel Monument, and amazing evenings on Piazza Navona and Campo de Fiori.

Florence, Italy

Our visit to Florence was filled with art, architecture, history, shopping and beautiful churches. Highlights included the amazing cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (Duomo), a panoramic view of the city from Brunelleschi's massive dome of Duomo, the Uffizi Gallery, the Ponte Vecchio, the Piazza della Signoria and the incredible "David" by Michelangelo.

Pisa, Italy

On our way to Florence from Cinque Terre, we made a brief stop and hiked it from the train station to The Piazza dei Miracoli, home of the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Duomo, Baptistery and Cemetary of central Pisa. Seeing the tower was awesome, and Pisa was a really nice little city to visit.

Cinque Terre, Italy

The "Cinque Terre" is a region consisting of five small villages on the Italian Riviera, and each village is a postcard-worthy picturesque vista right on the Mediterranean. The villages are linked by a hiking trail and trains, and we spent our two days there exploring all five villages and experiencing the unique features and personalities of each. The beautiful town of Vernazza, where we stayed, quickly became of my favorite places on earth.

Venice, Italy

The second stop on our European adventure was the beautiful city of Venice, Italy, whose canals and architecture has intrigued me for years. The floating city did not disappoint, and was highlighted by St. Mark's Square, St. Mark's Basilica, Doge's Palace, the Accademia, Dorsoduro, Frari Church, a nighttime gondola ride, and the beautiful, amazing canals of Venice.

Barbados

For our first anniversary, Cathy and I took a second honeymoon to Barbados and stayed in a luxurious resort called The Crane, overlooking Crane Beach, which was profiled by Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous as one of the top ten beaches in the world. It lived up to the hype, and then some. An amazing, wonderful week with my wonderful wife, and a perfect way to mark our first year together.

Friends Beach Trip 2009

The annual friends beach trip was a much larger event this year, as 18 people - including six little ones - shared a six-bedroom house right on the beach in Gulf Shores. We had a great time watching the babies play in the water and sand, ate some good seafood, and enjoyed spending some quality time with our friends.

Dodgers vs. Rangers

The second part of our Dodgers summer road trip took us back to Dallas to visit family and friends and to watch the Dodgers take two from the hometown Texas Rangers. Rangers Ballpark is a beautiful, fun stadium, and we had a great time.

Chicago

Cathy and I went to Chicago my birthday weekend to watch the first-place Dodgers take on the Cubs at Wrigley Field, and to take in the sights and sounds of the Windy City. In addition to attending two games, we took a great architectural boat tour of the Chicago River, made it to the top of the Sears Tower, visited Grant Park and Millenium Park, went to Navy Pier, walked the Magnificent Mile, ate at Harry Caray's and Pizzeria Uno, and checked out Oak Street Beach. Great trip. This was also my first chance to really test out the new Canon XSi, so I might have gone a little overboard... you've been warned.

Dismals Canyon Camping

The guys took our annual camping trip on the road this year to Dismals Canyon in northern Alabama. Good times were had by all, other than the extreme workout we all got by hauling gear to the top of a bluff to our campsite.

Mercedes Half-Marathon 2009

We completed our second Mercedes Half Marathon, improving on last year’s time by several minutes at 2:09:44, and we reached our goal of running a sub-10 minute pace for the entire race.

The Sugar Bowl

While the outcome of the game wasn't what we'd have all liked, the Alabama nation descended on New Orleans for New Year's for the first time since 1993, and good times were had on the bayou. Cathy, Rori, and I enjoyed walking around the French Quarter, eating some great food, and soaking up the pageantry of the Tide's first BCS Bowl Game in eight years.

Honeymoon in Cabo

Our Honeymoon destination was beautiful Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, where we stayed at the luxurious Playa Grande resort. We had a blast relaxing and winding down after the wedding festivities. While there we went parasailing, took a sunset cruise around Land's End, went on a snorkel cruise, did a couples' massage on the beach, explored the public beach and the marina district, took a water taxi around El Arco and Lover's Beach at sunset, and ate great food all week. It was a spectacular trip, and we will be back!

Texas Rangers Game

Cathy and I finally got a chance to go to The Ballpark at Arlington together for a Rangers game, just before the wedding festivities began. Unfortunately the home team got clobbered 17-4 by the Tigers, but we had a great time in some awesome seats.

UA Wedding Shower

My co-workers threw a wedding shower for Cathy and I last week, and they did it up right in full Alabama regalia including matching personalized “bride” and “groom” football jerseys, Coca-Cola and Golden Flake (as an homage to the Bear, of course), and a crimson and white cake. They welcomed Cathy to the University family in style, and we had a great time. Thanks to everyone who helped planned and put on a great shower for us - we had a blast! The photos were taken by University photographer Zach Riggins - thanks Zach!

The Shaws and I paid a visit to Minute Maid Park to see my Dodgers take on the homestanding Astros. While I was just happy to be there, the Dodgers played well and gave me a 5-2 win. Good times.

Cotton Row Run

Phil and I ran the Cotton Row Run 10-K race in Huntsville, AL on Memorial Day. I was feeling good and ended up running my personal best race at an official 52:39 for the 6.21 miles, although the official time was 40 seconds or so slow. Oh well, great run anyway.

Hawaiian Engagement

Cathy & I and Phil & Jenn spent a week in Kauai, including visits to exotic beaches, tours of mind-boggling canyons & rocky coastlines, boat cruises and chopper rides. But the absolute highlight, of course, was Cathy agreeing to become my wife. This was the trip of a lifetime.
