At Sabillasville Elementary School the PTA purchased butterfly kits for every classroom in the school.
On May 23rd, 2008, all the students took their butterflies outside for a butterfly release party.
At first the butterflies were hesitant to leave their homes.
Slowly, the butterflies became more courageous and began to fly.
Some butterflies needed help to take off.
The kindergarten students were calm, but their butteflies were very excited.
Ms. Ellenberg's hair attracted several butterflies.
Others landed on the kids.
The first graders waited patiently for their turn to release.
Then it was time for second grade.
Ms. Mortenson gave their butterflies a little help.
Third graders had their turn next.
Ms. Smith tried a new technique,
she laid the butterfly chamber on its side.
The fourth graders had some butterflies that couldn't wait to get out,
so they could land all over Ms. Wantz.
Ms. Doney wore a very appropriate shirt for the day.
The fifth graders watch as their friends prepare to leave. Do you think the butterflies will go to middle school next year too?
Some butterflies went straight to the ground and started eating grass.
Other butterflies found the oranges that had been in the butterfly chambers.
Kids were very careful. It's OK for a butterfly to land on you, but you don't want to touch their fragile wings.
Butterflies were landing on people everywhere.
And everyone took turns letting the butteflies walk along their hands.
Sabillasville is a great place to be a kid, or a butterfly!
