Hon. Robert Evans, MEP, gives speech in Maldives - 'Democracy in the 21st Century'
Male' - At a meeting organised by Open Society at Dharubaaruge last night, Hon. Robert Evans, a member of European Parliament, gave a speech titled 'Democracy in the 21st Century'. In the speech, Mr. Evans said he will ensure that Gayyoom keeps his promise to hold free and fair multiparty elections in 2008. He said that he had come to the Maldives to remind Gayyoom of his promises and that EU will continue to help the people of Maldives and made it very clear that if any country needs aid from EU, they should keep their word. Once a government makes a promise, they must be held accountable to their words. Mr. Evans also said that an independent judiciary and an independent election commissioner were important institutions that needs to be there to allow free and fair elections.
