08kohoj Fort Trek

On August 9, the TIFR sports club organised (the second) trek to a hill fort at Kohoj (near wada village; beyond Virar). The photos were clicked using coolpix L5 camera. It was cloudy (so cool); it also means that hardly any sunlight. So, contrast of the photos is poor.

Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope of TIFR

A group of scientists and their families hired 3 tata sumos to visit a field station of TIFR - Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT : http://www.gmrt.ncra.tifr.res.in) of TIFR located at Narayangaon (between Pune and Nashik) in Maharashtra. It was an overnight trip; we stayed at the guest houst of GMRT. These are scanned versions of the photos taken. We first visited Shivneri, the birth place of Shivaji, before reaching GMRT. On our way back the next day, we stopped at the MTDC run resort for tea just before we came down Malshej Ghat.

04 murud - jaljira (janjira) island fortress

An island fortess on coastal maharashtra. Several centuries ago, a Siddhi merchant from Africa had problem with his ships close to this island. He sought the permission of the chieftain of the mainland to dock his ships, carry out repairs (that can last several months) and then move on. The chieftain, whose mansion is on a hill nearly opposite the island refused permission fearing adverse influence of the foreign merchant and his crews on the locals. The merchant docked his ships nevertheless and built defences on the island. The local chieftain lost in the ensuing battle (could not take control of the island). The siddhi kings ruled the island for a couple of centuries till the British conquered India. jal = water; jaljira = fortress on water; murud is the village on the mainland.

trek to Naneghat

An overnight trek to Naneghat- an ancient (pre-christ) trail that connected the deccan plateau with the coastal region of Murbad, Kalyan and Mumai. It is about 5 feet in wide and in still good condition. An ancient cave has brahmi inscriptions dated to 1AD

Not only British, but also french (in puducherry) and portugese (in goa) colonised parts of India. The latter maintained their colonies for several years after British left. This is a visit to puducherry, the capital of french colony.
