Ruben Nuñez sent this at the same time as the two babies, next. It's much smaller and a foot was broken in shipping. The height is 2 /14 inches tall. It's nicer and more detailed than it appears here, but it's not as nice as the baby tapir. All three are made of balsa. I glued the leg, but didn't paint black over the crack. It stands, but is wobbly. Again, it's probably very nearly unique if not completely unique. Photo by Sheryl Todd, April 2002.
Ruben Nuñez sent me this balsa wood carving. The photos show two sides of the same carving. On one side you can see that the eye has faded. They're a little delicate since the paint is water based. The tapir has claws rather than toes, and it may be one of a kind or nearly so. A French tapir fan visited Ruben and could not find another one like it after Ruben bought this one for me. Ruben signed the bottom. It's got 4 front toes and 3 back toes, and a tail. It's a beautiful piece, I think. It stands 3 3/4 inches tall. Photo by Sheryl Todd, April 2002.

This is an old xerox of a beautiful color print by Jardin. I'm keeping it in the collection until I get a copy of the color version.
Mountain tapir tapestry from Salasaca, Ecuador, about 1996, made to order for Craig C. Downer and purchased by the Tapir Preservation Fund. Photo by Sheryl Todd. There were about 12 tapestries made to a similar design, but each is unique and some have strikingly different details.

A mountain tapir on commercial fabric. It was incredible to see this. Colombia is spelled wrong, but at least the animal is next to the South American continent on the design. Photo February 1, 2001, Sheryl Todd. To learn about mountain tapirs: http://www.tapirback.com/tapirgal/
