One of the special Christmas Cards I got this year was from Laura Robbins, tapir keeper at Dudley Zoo, West Midlands, UK. The baby lowland tapir is Ernie, born in 2005, and was Laura's first baby tapir. I wanted to post the card for all to enjoy :) Sorry, I photographed it on a cluttered background, then I didn't want to crop off the edges. The newspaper clipping says something about gorillas. 6. Casaba, a lowland tapir at the Houston Zoo in Houston, Texas. The bulb at the bottom of the tapir's nose is thought to help the tapir pull food into its mouth when eating. In Casaba's case, the bulb is very pink, which makes sense as it's actually part of her upper lip. In some individual tapirs, the coloration may be less prominent. Also note that the tapir's nostrils are able to flatten and can actually close to help keep water out when they're swimming. Photo by Jordan Shenhar, February 17, 2009. Some (but not all) tapirs retain a vestige of their juvenile spots on the feet and lower limbs as adults. This trait seems most common in lowland tapirs, but can occur in other species.
