Sometime in the early 1970s, we found out Mona's picture had been used on a postage stamp. Curator of Mammals at San Diego Zoo, Clyde Hill, told us a photographer had been around taking photos of animals native to Nicaragua for a stamp series. He said he thought it was Mona that had been photographed among the Baird's tapirs. I don't remember how I acquired the first stamp, but I did know it was her from her coloring, which was distinctive. This is Mona and me in 1970. We had just gotten her that week or so, and some friends came over to see her. That's Jim Burke on the right. What I have in my hand is a can of flea powder. She came into the country with fleas, but with a few applications they were gone. Fleas don't seem to hang around a tapir the way they do around dogs and cats.
