Just a few of the jars hiding since approx. 1953/1954 behind the soffit.
So far, the only one with a label. On the side it reads: Union Food Products, Brooklyn, NY
my old workhorse. i'll be sorry to see her go. i will not miss the oven.
in serious consideration as our accent border in the backsplash to be paired with a cream? crackled subway tile. we would use 2 rows of them 3/4 up from the counter.
1x2 venetian accent tiles
standing in the dining room entrance facing the porch (porch door is on the far left).
facing the dining room (basement stairs to the far left). side window was the former 1/2 bath window. large 'box' hanging down next to cabinets is the back of our builtin china cabinet. counter will prob. overhang a few inches on side cabinet.
BEFORE (and packing up). i will miss the old stove (but not the tiny oven). Look how low the cabinets are over the counter! AND the soffits are 2 feet tall.
BEFORE (and packing up). - we moved out the skinny freestanding table that was our only long countertop. the bathroom behind this wall is going away - and so is the wall. looking forward to decent lighting.
BEFORE (and packing up). pure chaos at this point. who knew i had so much stuff. (50% of which i'm tossing)
Bathroom off of the kitchen. This is going away.
built-in dining room china cabinet which is going to be made less deep.
what the hell happened to my dining room????? eek.
8/9/10: and they've only been here an hour!!
electricians on site putting in new service
what can i say? the front of the living room. yikes.
8/9/10: (hey, i just realized it's 8;9;10!!! 4pm. no more kitchen.
bathroom is going away
hard to imagine the stove will be there in a few weeks.
08/09/10: our kitchen in the dumpster
08/10/10 more rubble
8/11/10: our first breakage :( leaded glass pane of the china cabinet.
08/11/10: there goes the (sub)floor
8/11/10: the floor disappears. in the corner, i can wave to someone in the basement!
sample of our floor. but the planks will be 3 1/4" not 5". toffee maple hardwood double-stained prefinished from mirage.
who needs a door or a window?
8/12/10: waiting to become sister support beams under our floor.
8/12/10: support going in.
8/13/10: our new back door waiting for it's place. see the top windows?!
the original stove 'vent'
8/13/10: doorway reframed and window(s) all getting internal frames. this window is getting shorter but wider and set taller in the wall.
8/19/10: "driveway wall": framed for aircondition above and flush radiator below - and electric! (and a window that's not there yet)
8/19/10: Looking up!!! recessed lights are in and the pancake sockets (?) for the two pendants. We're going to (finally) be very well lit!
8/19/10: electric going in on patio wall - switches for lights near door and sockets coming tomorrow.
8/19/10: OHHHHHHHHHHHH....the irony: one of my best veggie garden seasons ever and we have no kitchen to cook in ...so behind in how fast we can eat these or give them away. Nice crop, eh?
8/20/10: ouch. all the banging and my thin plaster walls wasn't a great combo. oh well, gc says he'll plaster and paint and we'll get two painted rooms for the price of one!
8/20/10: Airconditioning sleeve beautifully in place - and 90% of electric work done!
8/21/10: major plumbing work happening today. giant troughs in our basement.
8/21/10: plumbing at the end of the day! kitchen sink plumbing and radiator/stove gas line done also. for the 1st time we WON'T have a pipe running right in the middle of the sink cabinet.
08/24/10: came home from the vacation-that-wasn't to drywall ceiling and insulation (a totally new concept to our formerly uninsulated exterior walls).
8/26/10: WINDOWS!!!! Nice big Anderson windows and the first coat of plaster starting over the sheetrock! flooring is here but going in next Tuesday. Lots of forward movement.
8/26/10: windows - you can see the aircon sleeve in place. radiator on site but will be installed soon. (behind door).
8/26/10: well, we'll need some repair and paint outside, it's obvious. no end of jobs to do. - new circular electric socket is for new porch light. Old old old old vent cover will be leaving us shortly.
8/26/10: side window. used to be our glazed 1/2 bath window. new electric meter for the new service and aircon sleeve.
8/31/10: FLOOR!!!! WE HAVE BEAUTIFUL MAPLE FLOORS!!!!!!
8/31/10: it reads a little lighter than this but it's so beautiful. our contractor said it was the best prefinished hardwood he'd ever worked with. we were so proud!
8/31/10: mirage 'sweet memories' toffee double-stained maple hardwood prefinished in a cashmere finish.
09/01/10: the truck and the nyc d.o.t. truck doing a face-off.
09/01/10: omg....ok. this is where the stove and hood will go. the china cabinet will be rebuilt and a solid back there (no more peeking into the diningroom) and a 'pot bar' will be hung on that.
09/01/10: facing the porch: gotta figure out that upper corner. prob. open shelves. the mid. cabinet with the beveled sides is my fave. we need to buy translucent ribbed glass for it. opening for the dishwasher. BIG RUN for counter here.
09/01/10: same run -better view.
these are the ones to beat but we cannot settle on them yet. still looking around. (as accent tiles amidst cream crackle subway tile backsplash)
our hood (not our cabinets)
too too blue. really much more beautiful in reality with browns and blues but too blue. these were nixed. no no no.
9/09/10: We have a hood! and duct work and a vent going to the outerwall of the house. Very odd to see it on the opposite side of the kitchen but getting used to it. (and I was worried Paul wouldn't like it but he really likes the hood).
09/09/10: drywall being laminated to our concrete firewall (we are a single-family semi-attached house).
9/14/10: NEW UNOILED SOAPSTONE COUNTERS! We have dreamed of this much of a counter-run!
Marble Techniques were incredible - Vance is the man! I HIGHLY recommend them for anyone in the NY area:
Marble Techniques Inc.
15-30 131 Street
College Point, NY 11356
P: 718.204.5001 ext 3036
9/14/10: NEW UNOILED SOAPSTONE COUNTERS! and the new Franke sink with the colander set on the ledge and the water tap in (faucet not shown). LOOK....runnels!!! carved in!
9/14/10: NEW UNOILED SOAPSTONE COUNTERS!
9/14/10: look at the carved runnels!
9/14/10: 9/14/10: NEW UNOILED SOAPSTONE COUNTERS! the stove side. (The china cabinet will be closed in soon).
9/14/10: newly oiled
9/14/10: OILED soapstone counters
9/14/10: OILED soapstone counters - well, 1/2 oiled. it was a magic trick!
9/21/10: just moments after arriving in her new home xoxoxo
9/21/10: LOTS of work today. Crown molding appears and frames around the windows.
9/21/10: not really in place yet - but delivered and in the kitchen. AND magnets stick to this ssteel door! (not sure if that's a good thing or a messy thing)
09/21/10: also not in place yet but in rehearsal for it's opening night: bluestar rnb 30" v1 - waiting for gas line hookup and electric and 6" back riser - also...hardware on cabinets...check!
09/24/10: 47 days post-demolition and I got to cook a real meal. basic but we ate on real plates with real forks and knives and i used a real pan (which I had to find in packed boxes)
Pan-seared tilapia and kale salad with celery root and shaved parmesan
9/24/10: lots of unpacking upheaval but a meal was made!!!
08/08/10: the wok on it's maiden bluestar voyage. sits right in the flame
08/08/10: dry sauteed string beans with minced pork. oh major yum. but still major smoke...think i need to back down the flame for my vent!
10/14/10: happy birthday to me! the tiles are here!!!! here they are on the soapstone counter
10/14/10: lots of shadows but these are the decorative tiles - sonoma
10/14/10: ok...hard to imagine. the top is the band (the three rows) under the dish cabinet stretching from window to window.
the bottom three row band is between the cabinets over the stove and below the hood on the other side of the kitchen.
10/14/10: close up but with flash glare because i'm above it.
10/20/10: Middle of week 10 and lots of activity once again. One side of the backsplash is up and waiting for sealing and grout.
10/20/10: these decorative are beautiful and subtle and really 'read' when you are standing at the stove.
10/20/10: the last open shelf cabinet was put in yesterday.
10/20/10: right side: the closed back of the china cabinet with crown molding and the vent boxed in above stove/cabinet. the panel will have our pot rack and a fabricated stainless plate near the bottom for where the pans hit the face and some decorative 'framing' to match the cabinets
10/20/10: We had no idea that this electrical box had always been hiding behind the basement entry door!
10/20/10: the 'transition' piece from kitchen to basement stairs. now...to figure out what to do with the basement stairs themselves!
blind corner cabinet fully-open
blind corner cabinet (medallion) door open
looking into top pot drawer (one more below)
front view of our 2 pot drawers
dish cabinet fully loaded
dish cabinet full loaded reeded glass installed
restoration hardware 15" prismatic pendant (to be used as a short pendant). 10/29/10: we had to change to the 11" penant...the 15" was too big. same look tho.
10/26/10: finally, all the backsplash tile is in. this side wall wasn't in the original plans but we had enough tile and now i can't imagine it without it...what were we thinking?? grouting and sealing tomorrow. (ignore the ucky paint samples on the wall...no go)
10/26/10: this pot rack wall is unfinished..will be 'framed' and the pot rack hung and a stainless steel "kick plate" for the hanging pots installed on the lower third.
10/26/10: ungrouted and unsealed but tiled! (the only reason you see the stove is because it's 1/2way into the room pulled out so the gc can grout behind it tomorrow.)
