I used Simplicity 5048, from 1972. I found it on Etsy.com and really bought it for the pants pattern (my September goal). I made version 3, the short sleeve Western shirt. Decided to skip the kerchief!
Pattern details.
I had never encountered this kind of shirt front pattern, where the right and left sides are cut with the diagonal extended neckline and the placket is attached separately.
Button placket done, no yokes yet.
Collar on, yokes and pockets. Need to add sleeves and pocket flaps.
Back yoke.
Pocket, without top flap.
Pocket and flap.
Flat-felled seam on exterior side.
Collar edge.
Side view -- still no buttons. This is my first short sleeve and my first Western style shirt.
Finished! I sewed it on my Necchi 555 but did the buttonholes on my Kenmore.
Flat-felled exterior side seam as suggested in Islander Method DVD. SO much easier than finishing inside seams.
Back view.
Left side view.
Right side view.
Right collar close-up.
The collar/collar band piece is soft and floppy; I prefer a more structured collar (with separate collar band), but this works for a summer shirt.
The button placket and front yoke were cut on the bias but you can't tell on account of the pattern. Next time, plaid.
The shirt is tapered and slim. The dog is tired.
Bottom hem.
I cut my plastic buttons off an old Gap shirt.
How many shirts can you wear to both a rodeo AND a luau?!
