Jan examining a knot on this piece of wood
coloration on some of the pieces of wood indicates mineralization, possibly pyrite?

pet wood flower bed in Decatur
on the way towards midlothian we stopped to check the area for fossils - found lots of parts of ammonite but no whole ones here this day - lots of "shelled" critters that I am not knowledgeable enough to name
closer view of roadside where we hunt for fossils
driving around Midlothian we located an area where we were able to find a good amount of pyrite and also some petrified wood that has a lot of calcite in it - this piece is about 18"-20" long but unfortuneately just broke apart when we tried to remove it

gorgeous purple thistles in bloom

Jan has made a good discovery and we all head over to take a look
well Jan got ahold of my camera and turned it around on me
another location for pyrite and fossils but here the pyrite was very small to tiny pieces and the best collecting area was underwater
we got our exercise walking around the walls looking for finds
at the base of this wall is a small crick, but too much water for us to be able to search in it at this time
I think this was Glen Rose, Texas but I may be wrong - we drove thru many small towns this day - but this town had a number of homes built of petrified wood
as well as a commercial building - gorgeous
well what rockhound could resist this? again fossils - here there are some places that have calcite that appears to be replacing some fossils but we were not able to get out anything whole
in another roadside we found this face!
blurry pic of owl sitting ontop of Melanie & Gilberts shop - taken thru upstairs window with screen - just couldn't get it focused in too well
this swirl is actually where the owl flew off
more pet wood buildings - this time in Purcell, OK

this is a mystery piece - couldn't capture the color - piece is 2 3/4 inches long and 1 1/4 inch thick
another view of mystery piece
last side of mystery piece
tried another means to get the picture - shows too dark - in person it has a greenish color to it but is very transparent - the little fossil in back has calcite in it with it poking out there on the side

pet wood with carbonized wood - so I was told

pyrite pieces
this is a very unusual piece - figure it formed within something to make the point? and has a round ball of pyrite attached
