2009 New Year's Ski

Jennifer, the kids, and I joined the Champaign Ski Club on the 2009 New Year's trip to Northern Michigan. We stayed in Petoskey and spent a day each at Nub's Nob, Boyne Highlands, and Boyne Mountain. Zach did much better than we expected on his first real trip and Faith earned her first NASTAR medal, a bronze. Our friends, Carl and Nancy Roth were also on the trip with their 5-year old son, Eric. The kids enjoyed each other on the slope and also on the bus to and from Michigan.

200811 Kickapoo State Park

Today I took the kids to Kickapoo State Park near Oakwood, Illinois for some flat water paddleboating. We were disappointed that the concession at Walnut Point State Park had closed early before our visit last week. I've known for some time that Kickapoo's concession, privately owned by former Urbana mayor Todd Satterthwaite, offered canoe rentals on the Middle Fork River, but I didn't realize they maintained a full fleet of kid-friendly paddleboats as well - that is until I dropped in on them during my weekly Prairie Cycle Club Saturday morning ride. The mild weather pattern persisted and we enjoyed a nice hour on the water. Afterwards the kids shared a Drumstick ice cream treat. With the end of daylight savings, the shadows crept up on us fast and I was unable to get as many good photos as I had hoped.

2008 November visit to Hardy's Reindeer Ranch

Jennifer, the kids, and I made our annual visit to Hardy's Reindeer Ranch. This is another great place for fall fun. As the name implies, they have reindeer. They also have a corn maze that is different every year. The object is to find several checkpoints in the maze. This year's maze was in the shape of a leaping reindeer and the 8 checkpoints were each of Santa's reindeer. The weather was overcast, but temperatures in the 60s - very mild for November. Hardy's also has hay rides, bunnies, a bubble machine, a playground with hay bales, and a shop full of Christmas decorations.

2008 Fall Day Camp at Walnut Point State Park

I took the kids to Walnut Point State Park near Oakland, Illinois as I have done every October since Faith was 2. We visited on Saturday October 25. As our tradition, we grilled some hot dogs, visited the playground, and took a hike. The highlight of the trip is usually a tour of the lake by paddle boat. However, this time, the concession area was closed. They've never closed before the last weekend in October before. We were disappointed, but had a great day.

2008 Back to School

Faith returned to school on August 20 to start 1st grade. Zach started pre-school just after Labor Day on September 3. His class meets on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. The rooms at the Prince of Peace Childhood Early Learning Center are named for characters in the children's book “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” Zach's is the Purple Cat Room, where his sister attended a few years ago. We had the opportunity to visit both classrooms and meet the teachers before prior to the first day of classes. Both kids seem to like their teachers a lot.

2008 Tour of Missouri Stage7

Zach and I watched most of the Rams game against the Giants. It was a disaster and we left with about 5 minutes to play so we could watch the final 3 laps of the Tour of Missouri. Stage 7 was a 5 lap circuit around downtown and the Central West End.

In the feed zone just outside Defiance, Missouri. We also watched the finish in St. Charles about 100m from the line, but did not take pictures there. It was quite crowded. Mark Cavendish took his 3rd stage of the Tour.

Pops and Lulu, Zach and Scott traveled to Jefferson City for the Stage 5 finish of the Tour of Missouri. Scott also raced in the Capital City Twilight Criterium. It didn't go so well for Scott, but it was a great day.

2008 Tour of the U-City Loop

I participated in my first cycling race today. It was the fourth criterium in the Labor Day Weekend Gateway Cup series. I stayed with the peloton for most of the race, but was caught behind a crash that separated me and I eventually abandoned the race. Zach participated in the big wheel division of the kids' race afterward. That was a lot of fun.
