San Jacinto Hike

Taking the gondola up was a trip. You go from dry desert to fragrant forest. From there we hiked the 5 miles to the peak. We moved at a good clip but took more and more breaks as we tired from the distance and the thinning air at the higher altitudes. The scenery is unbeatable! I can't wait to do this hike again.

L.A.S.T. - Day 8

Today we hung out with PIER church again. We went with Pastor Daniel and Nety to their retreat center in Santa Barbara. This is a place where many people we have met on our trip gave thier lives over to the Lord. It is in the mountains with pine trees and a river running along one side. It's similar to Forest Home but on a smaller scale. They have a dining hall, bunk houses, ropes courses, archery range, team building challenges and open land for tent camping and future buildings. The facility is will be run by an American family that just moved here last night from Pensylvania. They rent the facilities out to other churches and groups and use it themselves for youth retreats and a 4 day all-church retreat every Easter. We then came back to the Copantl Hotel and had some time in the pool and some time to reflect on the trip. Then we went to dinner with Pastor Daniel, his wife Mae, Daniel's brother David, and David's wife Hilda. (Daniel and David are actually co-pastors of PIE

L.A.S.T. - Day 7

Wow. This was a great day! We started the day off visiting a 60 year old woman who ministers to the drunk men who live in the streets. Unfortunately, the way the economy is in Honduras, it is very difficult to make a decent living and many men just give up and give in to alcohol. Some loose their homes and families and end up on the steet looking for the next fix. That's where Amandita comes in. She is the second in 3 generations of women (and now men with Amandita's son) who have dedicated their lives to helping these people get back on their feet with the Lord's strength. Amandita is first and foremost a formidable prayer warrior. She has a home to house the men and gives them chores in the home. She also helps get them training so they can get a job. They are not forcibly contained there but through her prayers many men have achieved sobriety with God's strength. All I can say is that she is amazing! L.A.S.T. - Day 6

Today we had free time in the morning and then met Terry and Lucila from Open Eyes Ministries for lunch at 11:00. They gave us the rundown on their happenings in Nicaragua, Honduras & Costa Rica. They are strong in leadership development, medical outreach and evangelism. Then we had some time to do some souveneer shopping and an early dinner. Now we just finished our debriefing and are going to bed becuase we have to be ready to leave for the airport at 5:00 am tomorrow morning. (sorry for so few pictures today. I didn't feel safe taking photos at the flea market and there wasn't anything else interesting to photograph today.)

L.A.S.T. - Day 5

Today we spent our second day in Managua visiting with Hosana Church. The senior pastor is big on radio and TV as a medium so they have their own radio studion on site. They also have a grade school which is expanding one grade each year. We had lunch at a mall that had some interesting stone art out front and Gene tried to strike up a conversation with some asian children playing an intense game of rock paper scissors... they were really into it! Anyway, after lunch we visited the Escuala Cristiana Oasis de Esperanza (Oasis Christian Church of Hope) near the city dump. Then we visited the actual dump about 2 blocks away. It was incredible. The garbage was burning and people were digging and there were even police on hand to make sure no one got out of hand. It seemed like as far as I could see was trash and little shacks made of trash. L.A.S.T. - Day 4

On Tuesday we left El Salvador and took a 35 minute flight to Managua, the capital of Guatemala. We go to our hotel and immediately had lunch with the founders of Verbo ministries, Bob and Myra. They have been here since the 70's after a large earthquake rocked the country. Myra then gave us a tour of their grade school and orphanage in Veracruz (just outside the capital). Then we visited their church and spoke to their senior pastor for a bit. It was a long and informative day!

L.A.S.T. - Day 3

This day we explored a potential site for debriefing. It is a secured compound on the beach southwest of San Salvador. The hotel is nice and the beach is great. Sand volleyball courts, hammocks and warm water. This would definitely be a nice place to discuss the successes and learnings on a future trip to El Salvador. As a side note, Esperanza got in the ocean for the first time ever. Way to go Espie! We also got to have dinner with some representatives from a group called Operation Blessing. Their regional and local leaders, Jordan and Manuel Alfonso Rodriguez- "Memo", respectively. They were very hospitable and told us about their efforts to get anti-parasite pills out to the schools. They are primarily focusing their efforts in this and areas in the western part of the country which is much poorer than the eastern side. L.A.S.T. - Day 2

Today we went to Iglesia El Buen Samaritano in the community of Las Delicias in the region of San Martin. There we met with pastor Miguel who has allowed God to work through him to help his community. He has built such a good reputation that the Catholic church is now partnering with his church to help bring clean water to the surrounding villages. The clean water will actually save the lives of many children so this project is about much more than the financial savings. This "water project" has become very involved and although they have a well drilled and 3 cisterns built, they now have to pump and pipe the water to the cisterns. After we got done there, we went to see some alternative hotels for future groups and then back to our hotel and debriefed and ate dinner and then went to Peter's home to meet his family and have coffee. Peter works with the group we are considering as a partner and he has a great family. Overall a good day with many learnings! Until tomorrow.....

L.A.S.T. - Day 1

We traveled overnight from LAX to San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador. Although the plane was late taking off, everything else about the flight was smooth- especially since Shannon and I took sleeping pills. When we got to our hotel we had 45 minutes and then we left for our first location- San Jose El Naranjo. It is a 2 hour drive from the capital including 30 minutes on a dirt road. We were evaluating a great ministry that has been empowering local El Salvadorian churches for 20 years! They are big on collaborating with the communities around the churches, including projects to build homes, provide clean water, preventing the spread of Dengue Fever and also designing functional stoves that could save the lives of many children by allowing the smoke to escape the home. We're very tired and have another tour tomorrow so that's all for now. Que Dios les bendiga! (May God bless you!)

Universal Studios Hollywood

We went to Universal yesterday with friends Michael & Karen. It was a fun- especially because we got in free with the mailers they sent to Irvine residents. Last time I was there was probably 10 years ago and I'll probably wait another 10 before I go again. There's just not that much to see but it was fun hanging out with friends :)

Yosemite 2007

We went up to Yosemite National Park with some friends last weekend to camp and hang out and do some hiking. The weather was great and there were almost no bugs! The Taylors and me (Justin) made the hike to Half Dome (17 miles) on Saturday. Shannon and I definitely want to go back soon!

Casa De Baja

DAY 1: Jeff & Bethany were the team leaders for Team 4. Octavio (the father of the house) also helped out a lot! The students were amazingly skilled in a short period of time. Very productive day :) Team 13 was split up into other teams on Friday because we couldn't find the site where we were supposed to build our house. That night I took some heat from Jeff for keeping students up past curfew. **DAY 2** We finally reunite team 13 and get renamed "The A Team" by Scott Griffiths, our new builder. By the end of the day, we have caught up to and passed most other teams. We pretty much rocked. **DAY 3** Sunday was our last day building our house. Although many were afraid of heights, the roof seemed to be the favorite hang out spot that day. Some guys decided they didn't need as much clothing as yesterday and some played Chuck Norris but all helped and we finished the house around 7:00 pm when we handed the key over to a very happy woman and her children. **DAY 4** We broke camp on Mo

This trail has flowers, wildlife, forests and amazing views.... but you pay for it in mileage (10 mi. total) and some very rocky terrain. Not for the faint of heart.

Tenaja Canyon

7.4 mile hike down into Fisherman's Camp. Tenaja means holes. There are watering holes in the valley floor that contribute to the wildlife and vegitation of the area. Trailhead is at 33°30'36.04"N , 117°21'58.14"W

Peters Canyon Hike 2

This is the second time we've done this hike. The smoke in the background is a few miles away and we could see the fireline from most of the hilltops. Dogs got really tired this time in the 90 degree heat.
