We finally made it up the big hill to the vineyard section of Obernai

Some towns were known for their wells
Other towns had gated entrances (4 originally but some were taken out so farm trucks could get by - grapes are the most important cash crop of the area.
This small canal was used in olden days so people could wash their clothes, as we could understand the explanation from a nice Frenchman, who only spoke french :)
