2011 Road Trip in Physical Education Bulletin Board

After traveling to various locations around the country and participating in 17 different sporting events, students, parents, and faculty had fun looking at the pictures on the bulletin board. At the end of the year, students got to take the pictures home.

2011 Road Trip - Indianapolis 500

Students played a game called Indy 500 when they studied the Indiapolis 500 car race. They used a paper plate as a steering wheel and jogged laps around the gym. When it was time for a pit stop, they came into the pit and did an exercise in order to return to the track. This game wore them out! Before playing the game, students watched a little bit of last year's Indianapolis 500. It was exciting.

2011 Link 4 Life Run

With the new date in May, we expected better weather for the eighth annual Link 4 Life run but it was a chilly morning. The new venue at Cowtown will take some getting used to but the students appeared to be enjoying this historical museum. Collegiate was fortunate to place 3rd for the school with the most participants. Congratulations students, parents, and faculty who either ran or brought children to the Link 4 Life run.

2011 Kentucky Derby Class Winner

As students participated in the Kentucky Derby in Physical Education, each class chose a horse that they would cheer for in the real Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. This year Mrs. Patrick's class chose "Animal Kingdom." This horse ran an exciting race to come from behind and win the "Run for the Roses." Mrs. Patrick's class received roses for choosing the winning horse. Each child got to take a rose home.

2011 Road Trip - Fencing

Although the national fencing championships will take place this summer, we took an imaginary road trip to Reno, Nevada, to learn about fencing. Since this is a sport I knew little about, I received some assistance from a fencing club that practices in Derby, Kansas. My thanks to them. Students enjoyed learning about the different kinds of swords. We used half a swim noodle and pretended it was a foil. In order to receive points, the foil can touch only the torso of the body. Students also learned that fencing is much different than the swashbuckling sword fighting that they see on TV or movies. Fencing is much more like "poking" the opponent. The children seemed to enjoy their brief introduction to this sport.

2011 Mom's Day

It was great fun at the annual early childhood mom''s day. We had a carnival theme and there were great stations set up outside and in the EC building. The gym was also set up with carnival type games and children enjoying playing the games with their mothers.

2011 Let's Move in School

As part of national physical education and sport week, early childhood students, faculty, and staff met outside for movement activities that celebrated the national campaign entitled "Let's Move in School." Children danced and moved in various ways.

2011 Road Trip - Kentucky Derby

Our Physical Education Road Trip took us to Louisville, Kentucky, for the annual running of the Kentucky Derby. This was the best year ever, as the hats were so fun and creative. The stick horse races were hysterical and everyone enjoyed the lemonade mint juleps!

2011 Road Trip - Golf

Students worked on striking skills while learning about golf. They did this as we took an imaginary trip to Augusta, Georgia, for the Master's Golf Tournament. Students worked on both driving and putting. It was great fun!

The class who chose the winning musher for the 2011 Iditarod Trail Dog Sled Race was Mrs. Burcham's morning Pre-K class. They enjoyed an ice pop party.

2011 Read and Romp Day AM

Read and Romp Day is one of our favorite activities of the school year. This is a collaborative activity between the physical education department and library. Children visit 10 ten stations in the gymnasium and are read a short book, followed by a simple physical activity. It is a very fun and active event.

On Shrove Tuesday, Olney, England, and Liberal, Kansas, held their international pancake race. We celebrated by holding our own pancake race in Physical Education.

2011 Road Trip - Bass Fishing

It was fun to talk about the sport of bass fishing. Students enjoyed fishing for magnetic fish with our "makeshift" fishing poles. Kindergarten children pretended to be in a fishing tournament and used a score sheet to tally up their 5 best fish of the day. Fish were different colors and had different point values. We used large tarps for our lake.

2011 Road Trip - Iditarod

It was very interesting studying the Iditarod Dog Sled Race. Students watched a video and met a real Husky puppy. Each class chose 3 mushers to follow throughout the Iditarod; two men and one woman. Standings were posted each day in the hallways so students and parents could see how the mushers were doing in the race. We held our own Iditarod in PE. Scooters were used for the sled and students were the dogs. Students learned that they had to take time out to feed and rest their dogs and themselves. We used Kix cereal for our dog food. It was great fun!

2011 Road Trip - Bowling

Although students used only 3 pins during our bowling study, they had a great time learning about this sport. They started by learning the skill of sliding a beanbag to knock down the pins. This helped students with the three step approach and the proper technique of stepping forward in opposition and following through with the arm. They progressed to a ball and learned about strikes, spares, and open frames.
