Darma Valley Trek 2009
These Photos are taken in Darma Valley and around Dharchula in Pithoragarh district in the state of Uttarakhand, India at the end of October and into November 2009. As I trekked up the valley many of the villagers and their animals were heading down to warmer climes for the winter. This annual mass exodus is called "The Migration".
The Darma valley starts near Dawe village on the Tibetan-Indian border and flows southwards. It has a rich flora and avi-fauna.. A rivulet called Nyuli Yangthi that drains Panchachuli east glaciers flows into Dhauli Ganga at Dugtu-Dantu villages. Mandab river joins Dhauli at Sela.
The Darma valley has 12 villages with a population of less than 1000. The villagers are livestock rearers and traders, cultivating common buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) and potatoes. Since 1970, cultivated land has decreased to 25% of former size, allowing biodiversity to return to Darma Valley
