latest injury

did another endo off my bike going down a steep section and touched my front brakes a little too hard. jumped back on my bike and finished riding down and rode up to my friend. he starts telling me "pour water on it! pour water on it!" i had no idea what he was talking about, i thought he meant my brakes or something. then he pointed at my leg and i had some nice pulsating blood coming out of my knee and snaking a river down my leg. i felt absolutely nothing. even when he poured water on it and i rubbed all the stones out. i still feel almost nothing, several hours later... either there is something wrong with me or i have some seriously good endorphins!

Road blocks and displaced people

i took photos of every road block in the 15km between my village and the city of eldoret. at the time they were not manned by any youth "protecting" us. the road blocks cause you to play chicken with logging trucks and matatus - who gets to drive on the road first... the other photos of are displaced people in eldoret waiting to receive food rations from crwrc. they live either in camps for the displaced but do not have enough food or they are staying in cramped quarters with friends and families because their homes have been burned or they are too afraid to return.

these photos were taken at different refugee camps in Western Kenya. tens of thousands of people pushed from their homes into tents and makeshift shelters. little food. cold nights. stress. sadness. uncertain futures. but hope, still...

Ashes in Eldoret

photos taken (with permission) in eldoret at the site of a former business and rental home units. the building was burned down when someone seeking revenge drove a car into the building and then set everything on fire. there was a posho mill and a welding shop in front and homes in the back. the landlord and the welder are determined to start over.

this is a little girl born at plateau hospital. she was in breech position and during the c-section prep her mother died shortly after receiving a spinal. they managed to save the baby via a post-mortem c-section. she had no clothes, nappies (diapers) or blankets (the mother had tried to give birth at home unassisted and was unprepared). With money given by a generous friend (this past summer) i was able to get her some clothes and blankets. the family named her after me and the friend - alidajoy jepkemboi

maasai village - tanzania

I went with meagan to a maasai village that her ngo works in. they are building a school there. basically i hung out all day. i drove around alot with the driver, went to assess a 4 year old with hydrocephalus, and hung out with a group of ladies in town. we also saw a cheetah on the way home! a pretty rare sighting!

Lake Naivasha

The Kenya staff went on a spiritual retreat to this area one hour outside of Nairobi. We saw lots of monkeys hanging around, and went to the island where the movie "Out of Africa" was filmed. They brought in a bunch of wild animals for the film and then left them there, including migratory wildebeests. They still have the instinct to migrate even though the island is only 2 km across. They just migrate 1 km and then return the next day (to the other side of the island).
