While in Melaka (Malacca)
Malacca used to be a rich and busy sea port which was invaded by the Portuguese ending decades of Malay Sultanate rule. The Dutch later invaded Malacca from the Portuguese circa 1600. Later on the British wrestled Malacca from the Dutch and made Malacca part of the Straits Settlement.
The Japanese also had their share of Malacca during WW II but later Malacca went back to the British until the Malaysian independence.
