Day 33 - Mojave to Broad Ridge (14.8 mi)

Finally feeling better - time to walk to Kennedy Meadows! Glad to be out of the windy wind farms. This section would be my slowest on the trail as I waited for snow to melt in the High Sierras. Reports in Mojave put snowpack at 150-200% average and we were all anxious about early entry.

A quick descent through a maze of ATV tracks to the road and a long ride into windy Mojave. Serious intestinal distress and a night spent on the bathroom floor convinced me to take a recovery weekend in Mojave.

An early start to hike the infamous LA aqueduct. A cool breeze and plenty of water made the desert bearable. My day ended with climbs up then down then up again into the Tehachapi mountains. A windy night under the stars.

After a more than relaxing zero day, I returned to solo-hiking and began the push to Mojave. I was well rested from my stay with the Saufleys so I decided not to visit the Andersons. Wet weather made for comfortable walking.

A hot roadwalkin' detour day. Advantage of roadwalk - more McDonalds! Disadvantage of roadwalk - mistaken for hobos while eating at a train station and forced to camp under a billboard sandwiched between train tracks and a major highway.

Day 22 - Jackson Flat Campground to Station Fire Detour (? mi)

A spectacular climb straight up the snow on Baden-Powell. Overall a great day, but my hiking companions were much more experienced than myself, so I felt awkward in the snow. I have no idea how far I walked today - we began the long (40+ mi) detour around the Station fire closure. Ominous rumblings in my intestinal tract.

I had planned to spend the night in Wrightwood, but hitched out with an experienced group of hikers to tackle Mt. Baden Powell the next day. A flyer at the hardware store suggested Baden-Powell was "Impassable Without Capons" and I was poultry-less, so I was glad to have company.

We jogged 8 mi in 2h down to Cajon pass and a deliciously unhealthy breakfast at McD's. Today's mileage is innaccurate because we were forced to follow the Sheep fire detour. We camped in the snow on Wright mountain above Wrightwood.

Woke up early to take pictures of the springs. Hiked another easy day above Sliverwood Lake and relaxed in the sun near Horsethief Canyon. Dreaming of Cajon Pass + McDonald's for breakfast in the AM!

Another hot day - but not too hot to spend an afternoon at the (clothing optional) Deep Creek hot springs. Sun + natural hot springs + pretty Russian ladies from LA = PCT bliss. Camped near the beach with a great gaggle of thru-hikers.

With hiker hunger full force, I ate "The Blob" for breakfast at the Grizzly Bear Cafe. Biscuits topped with three eggs and bacon - buried in sausage gravy and melted cheese. YUM! I hiked a relaxing day and set up camp early on a ridge cleared by burn.

My hardest day yet. The post office would be closed over the weekend - I decided to hike a blazing hot 6000' climb up Mission Creek and set myself up for an easy Friday walk into Big Bear. I spent the night in a spooky haunted cabin.

Day 12 - Spittler Peak to Skunk Cabbage Meadow (10.0 mi)

And so it begins! I humped over (rather than around) Apache peak to avoid the snow that prompted my "snow course" vacation. I rounded Red Taquitz and joined a group of hikers lost in the "snow bowl" for a walk to Devil's Slide - the landmarks were familiar from my snow course hikes. Set up camp in a different part of Skunk Cabbage Meadow, this time avoiding the snow.

A pleasant walk down Devil's Slide with Mexican Foodz n' Beers back in Idyllwild. The next day's plan was to drive/walk back to Spittler and spend another three days in THE SNOW! Nothing like a few days of snow traverse in running shoes with trekking poles for self arrest. I EAT DANGER!

Day 10 - Snow Course Day Two

A brilliant beautiful day. We practiced snow navigation and found our own way to "Little Taquitz" peak. The side trail was snowed over so we walked the snowy/icy spine to a fire lookout and lunch in the sun. A dicey but rewarding walk. In the afternoon we practiced self arrest.

After a hot breakfast in Idyllwild, we climbed the Devil's Slide trail and camped at Skunk Cabbage Meadow. The meadow offered many dry spaces to set up camp, but this was SNOW COURSE - and if it's your first night at SNOW COURSE you HAVE to camp in the snow ;)

Day 8 - Live Oak Trail to Apache Peak/Idyllwild (10.4 mi)

A misty cold morning, but the sun came out and brightened the icy cold crest. The north face of Apache was still buried in snow and reports from Warner Springs suggested heavy snow ahead. Decided to bail at the Spittler Mtn side trail, resupply, and make plans for the snow. Some above-and-beyond hospitality from other hikers gave me good company and a place to stay in Idyllwild.
