Thomas Russell and Eva Linnell: PRODECI, Ecuador 2010

Thomas Russell and Eva Linnell working with local NGO PRODECI in the valley of Intag, Imbabura, Northern Ecuador. The project aimed to provide technical support concerning portable water supply. This was achieved by reviewing the existing water supply systems, identifying the improvements requires and subsequently designing, costing, procuring and overseeing the installation of new systems, as well as improving the existing ones.

Lincoln Smith and Sam Cocks: SELCO, India 2010

Lincoln Smith worked with SELCO in order to test existing solar biomass dryer designs. Subsequently, he designed and supervised the construction of an improved solar biomass dryer, communicated these to local workshops and the local college and conducted market research within the local rural communities. Sam Cocks worked with SELCO in order to design and implement an improved paddy husker, which removes the husks from rice and aids with the local communities industry significantly.

Drew Corbyn: CRT, Nepal 2009

Drew Corbyn worked with the Centre for Rural Technology Nepal (CRT/N) to develop their capacity to implement hydraulic ramp pumps. Drew was responsible for developing the programme, coordinating the USAID funded pilot project to install two water projects in rural villages in Nepal as well as providing technical expertise for other problems.

Hayley Weston worked alongside three students and one teacher from VXYZY in order to design and construct a bio-diesel transesterification plant for a rural community in Pabal, India. The project aimed to use as many locally sourced component materials in the design in order to reduce reliance on mechanical components and to improve the structures sustainability. This album includes photos taken by Hayley from Nepal, Mali, Ghana and Kyrgyzstan that highlight the need for similar developments in other parts of the world.

Matthew Little: SIBAT, Philippines 2007

Matthew Little was working alongside SIBAT in order to implement small wind turbines for electricity production in remote areas in the Philippines. This involved improving the design, including the various electrical and mechanical aspects, of a 1kW wind turbine. Further, in order to make the work more sustainable Matthew developed a two-day training course in order to explain resource management, system design and the electrical design process to the engineers working with SIBAT. Matthew was also involved in fault finding and upgrading existing solar and hydro power systems.

Nigel Vaz: RECED, Nepal 2007

Nigel Vaz was working alongside the Renewable Energy for Clean Environment and Development (RECED) organisation in Nepal. Over 75% of Nepal’s total energy consumption is met by firewood and the majority of Nepali families cook on a traditional stove, which for many is no more than an open fire in the kitchen. Indoor air pollution from the burning of solid fuels for cooking is the fourth largest cause of death in developing countries – an estimated 1.5 million deaths per year worldwide. Nigel’s placement, therefore, focused on improved cooking stoves (ICS), a simple and effective piece of technology which can replace the traditional stove. The improved cooking stove encloses the cooking fire and has a chimney which dramatically reduces indoor air pollution.

Anita Goyal and TJ Harding-Newman were working alongside the NGO MZ PHC in Suriname in 2005 in order to assess the problems with existing solar panels. Their expertise were used provide a greater understanding of solar panels in general which helped to inform the NGOs future decisions. Their second project involved assessing and improving barrel incinerators in order to improve their longevity and make them more transportable.

Anna Tompsett and Joe Mulligan: NAKRUDA, Nigeria 2005

Joe Mulligan and Anna Tompsett work alongside the Nakwai Rural Development Association (NAKRUDA) in order to survey the entire internal road network and research methods for solving problems which threaten the road network, such as erosion. Further, they began an engineering plan for the Dadiya river crossing and an excavation of the river approaches.

Emily King and Patricia Xavier: Iracambi, Brazil 2005

Emily King and Patricia Xavier's project was to set up a hydro-logical monitoring scheme to highlight how the land use within an area affects the quality of the natural water supply. This information will be used to encourage the government led scheme 'Payment for Environmental Services (PES)' which aims to economically reward landowners for protecting the environment, including the quality of the natural water supply. They worked alongside the NGO and research organisation Iracambi.

Ankur Narayan, Sasha Grodzinski and Joseph Bull: WAC and Tribhuvan University, Nepal 2005

Ankur Narayan, Sasha Grodzinski and Joseph Bull working with the Women In Action Council (WAC) and Centre for Energy Studies (Tribhuvan University) to improve the performance of stoves being installed in rural areas, and to combine them with a kitchen smoke extraction system. The project branched into a series of investigations, including, attempting to improve the efficiency of existing eco-stove designs by combining them with biomass stoves which are designed locally in Nepal. Similarly, they investigated practical methods of removing the smoke given off by the stove using combinations of bamboo hoods, DC exhaust fans and metal chimneys.

Christopher Pritchard: Ixtatán Foundation, Guatemala 2005

Working alongside the Ixtatán Foundation, Christopher was responsible for repairing the damaged roof-top rain water-collecting basins and then building, and teaching the community how to build, ceramic water filters. Secondly, he was responsible for building four standard fog collectors in order to collect data which will be used to assess whether San Mateo could viably use fog collection to provide adequate amounts of drinking water. This data would be presented to Fog-Quest who would help implement a later project to install the appropriate fog water collection infrastructure.

Mohammad Ali, Susan Long, Sam Crusz and Robert Quail working with Pastoral Social in Ecuador 2004.The team worked on three projects: the Fogón de Lorena, water purifying filters and research into the transportation of vaccines. This album contains photographs of Susan Long whose project involved producing a water filter design that could be made in Ecuador, using local materials and skills and which could significantly improve the quality of drinking water in the region.

Mohammad Ali, Suzanne Long, Sam Crusz and Robert Quail working with Pastoral Social in Ecuador 2004.This team worked on three projects: the Fogón de Lorena, water purifying filters and research into the transportation of vaccines. This album contains photographs of Mohammad Ali and Robert Quail, who were predominantly involved with the Fogón de Lorena project. The Fogón is a wood stove cooker designed to reduce the amount of smoke in the home and increase the efficiency of wood use in order to make fuel consumption more economically and environmentally friendly. Fogón, with a more efficient method of construction, were built in five different communities with the construction technique being taught to the local people. A booklet was produced in Spanish to explain the construction method in an accessible manner and national coverage enabled Pastoral Social to have greater public exposure.

Adam Fairman, Amit Hathi and Zubair Mistry: ORSED, India 2004

Adam Fairman and Amit Hathi, working with ORSED, carried out a study into rainwater runoff around Pondicherry with the aim of investigating methods of increasing the supply of potable water for domestic use. This involved site investigations to ascertain the existing situation, calculating the volume of runoff from the watershed and investigating different methods of how best to store the water. Zubair Mistry was involved with surveying the sources of drinking water in the villages of the Villapuram District, north of Pondicherry. The villages have two main sources of drinking water, the bore well and the hand pump. The bore wells are government run and form the main source of drinking water for most villages, however, due to poor maintenance they often become defunct and the villages then rely on the hand pumps. Zubair produced a survey of these water sources, determined the extent of sea water infiltration and was able to highlight specific causes for concern within the supply.

Himanshu Parikh: Slum Networking

According to UN reports, over 900 million people now live in urban slums. The concept of ‘slum networking’ has been developed by Indian engineer Himanshu Parikh so that the people who live in these conditions can have access to clean water, sanitation and reasonably good quality housing. Parikh’s concept uses natural topography with the pattern of development in the slum in order to provide channels for sewage, water supply and roadways. The community members themselves are at the center of his concept – slum dwellers are allowed to buy the land they are squatting on, where possible, giving them a direct incentive and security for development. In Indore in India 181 slums have been networked, providing the city with 360km of new roads, 300km of new sewer lines, 240km of new water lines, 120 community halls and access to resources.

Mahmut Tuncer and Jana Albuerne: CMC, Ludhiana 2003

Mahmut’s project was concerned with developing and upgrading the Medical Gas systems at CMC. Medical gases such as oxygen, sterilized air and suction used in ventilators, and nitrous oxide used for anesthetics form the back-bone of even the smallest of hospitals – and CMC certainly can’t be labeled as just a ‘small hospital’. Jana’s project mainly involved the creation of a blue-print and drawing database for the CMC buildings. Building legislation in India is changing and official building permission is being introduced as an obligatory requirement for all buildings, whether newly built or existing. The aim of the project was to organise and systematically number their architectural drawings and to create a computer database where they were all recorded for reference, including details of when the buildings are to obtain building permission, or when work is intended to be carried out.

John Arnold and Stephanie Smithers: Bengal Engineering College, India 2003

60 million people living in Bangladesh and West Bengal, India are being poisoned every day from the water they drink. Since the 1970’s these regions have been the focus of many water and sanitation schemes aimed at switching drinking water supply from contaminated surface water to ‘safe’ groundwater. These schemes have been very successful and hundreds of thousands of hand pumps are now in use. In the early 90’s however it was discovered that this ground water was contaminated with arsenic, a naturally occurring substance. John Arnold and Stephanie Smithers, working alongside the Bengal Engineering College in Kolkata, were involved in redesigning the UNICEF and the Government of West Bengal (GOWB) water filters to more effectively remove arsenic and iron from the water supply.

Claire Grisaffi and Henry Travers: ORSED, India 2002

Claire Grisaffi and Henry Travers worked alongside the Organisation for Social and Environmental Development (ORSED) in the Distirct of Villapuram, Pondicherry state in Tamil Nadu. Their project involved testing the feasibility of introducing solar power into rural areas in terms of cost, environmental impact and social sustainability. Information was gathered through fieldwork in ten villages in the area as well as meeting government officials. This information was used with data collected on family incomes, attitudes towards the introduction of solar power and power consumption in order to compile a report at the end of the placement.
