Adam Fairman, Amit Hathi and Zubair Mistry: ORSED, India 2004
Adam Fairman and Amit Hathi, working with ORSED, carried out a study into rainwater runoff around Pondicherry with the aim of investigating methods of increasing the supply of potable water for domestic use. This involved site investigations to ascertain the existing situation, calculating the volume of runoff from the watershed and investigating different methods of how best to store the water.
Zubair Mistry was involved with surveying the sources of drinking water in the villages of the Villapuram District, north of Pondicherry. The villages have two main sources of drinking water, the bore well and the hand pump. The bore wells are government run and form the main source of drinking water for most villages, however, due to poor maintenance they often become defunct and the villages then rely on the hand pumps. Zubair produced a survey of these water sources, determined the extent of sea water infiltration and was able to highlight specific causes for concern within the supply.
