Massachusetts Task Force 1 (MA-TF1) deployed between October 29 and November 3 to assist in search and recue operations after Hurricane Sandy. The team was originally staged near Middleboro, MA, to be able to respond quickly to damage in the state of Massachusetts especially on the Cape and southern shore. Massachusetts was less affected by the hurricane and did not need the services of the team. As a result, FEMA deployed MA-TF1 to New York City. Working at the direction of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), MA-TF1 conducted wide area searches in Queens and Staten Island including the communities of Howard Beach, Hamilton Beach, Broad Channel, Rockaway Beach, Far Rockaway, Eltingville, and Tottenville.
