Plymouth Scenes

Plymouth began as a fishing village. It belonged to the Prior of Plymton. (A prior was the head of a priory or small abbey). In the early 13th century the prior turned the village into a town by starting a market there. In those days there were very few shops so if you wanted to buy or sell goods you had to go to a market. Once a market was up and running in Plymouth merchants and craftsmen would come to live and work there and it would grow into a town. Plymouth today is a vibrant City with a population of around 250,000. The City boasts a University and College with approximately 30,000 students, giving the City a youthful feeling. Kents Cavern

Cockington Village

No holiday to The English Riviera would be complete without a visit to Cockington. This idyllic village is hidden in a deep valley just one mile from the bustle of Torquay. It is easily accessible from the seafront by bus or car, or alternatively by horse-drawn carriage in keeping with the history of the area. Visitors find themselves transported to a magical land, so peaceful you can almost hear a pin drop. Narrow winding lanes open out onto beautiful chocolate box cottages, old English gardens and thatched gift shops. These sell locally produced crafts and Devonshire Cream Teas. There are 450 acres of parkland, woodland and lakes to explore. The lakes themselves are thought to have been created by monks living at nearby Torre Abbey, to supply them with fresh fish and were restored by local landowner, Richard Mallock before he died in 1900.

Morwellam Quay

An award-winning, evocative museum and visitor centre based around the historic port and mine workings on the River Tamar. Here in the heart of the spectacular Tamar Valley, amidst towering cliffs and gently rolling farmland, a lost world lives again. Costumed staff welcome visitors to the restored port and help to transport you back to the bustling 1860s when heaps of gleaming copper ore filled the quays and a forest of ships' masts lined the river. All human life is here as you explore the busy assay office, marvel at the over-crowded miner's cottages and stroll through the delightful, walled gardens. There's also an opportunity for you to play your part! Authentic replica costumes are available for you to promenade through the village, while the children find out what life was really like working on the "dressing-floors" of the mine or acting as servants in the "Manager's House".

Isles of Scilly

St Ives

St Ives, the most famous of Cornish holiday towns, loved for generations, is easy to reach by road or by air and easy by train, too, along one of the most spectacular railway journeys in Britain to crystal blue waters, golden sands and a warm welcome. We nearly forgot the mild sub-tropical climate, warmed year round by the Gulf Stream! Life here is cradled around the harbour where boats still land good catches of freshest fish for the local restaurants to nourish you with. Brought ashore on the ancient granite quays, the catch is of the highest quality for your dinner plate or for the tables of some of Britain's finest restaurants. A maze of tiny cobbled streets to wander through, lined by fishermen's cottages, with a breathtaking seaside vista to greet you at the end of each one.

Tintagel

According to one legend the infant Arthur was thrown by the waves on the beach by Merlin's cave. King Arthur's time in history was in the fifth century. He is identified with the known history of a Celtic chieftain of the period who led his countrymen in the West in their resistance against Saxon invaders. Many believe that Arthur was of a mixed Roman and British parentage. It is always difficult to prove if Arthur did exist but certainly there was a great warrior in the West of England who had some kind of fortress where Tintagel Castle, (King Arthur's Castle) is today. The original fortress has gone but archaeologists have found proof in their diggings on the Tintagel Castle, that fifth century citizens lived on the site. The replacement Castle was built between 1230-1236 & is now nearly 800 years old. Within two hundred years the Castle was in ruins & remains so to this day. Earl Richard of Cornwall paid for the construction of the Castle & it is owned by the Duke of Cornwall.

Mt EDGCUMBE HOUSE & COUNTRY PARK

Mt EDGCUMBE HOUSE & COUNTRY PARK Mount Edgcumbe House is the former home of the Earls of Mount Edgcumbe. Set in Grade I Cornish Gardens within 865 acres Country Park on the Rame Peninsula, South East Cornwall. Mount Edgcumbe House was first built in the 1500s and was restored after World War Two. It is jointly owned by Cornwall County Council and Plymouth City Council and is one of the regions most popular historic tourist destinations.

Dartmoor

The word Dartmoor conjures up many things to many people. Some think of ponies and cream teas, others picture vast tracts of wilderness and bottomless bogs. To those who take the time to get to know the 'moor' it is 368 square miles of pure intrigue and fascination could fall under its spell. Over the past 12,000 years man has hunted, farmed, mined, quarried and lived on and around Dartmoor. From the early Mesolithic hunter gatherers to the modern day 'moorman', humans have left their marks on its landscape. Every tor, mire, stream, gully, wood or valley will have a name, granted many of them won't appear on the modern map but they will all have a name showing evidence of the presence of man. Therefore if man has been associated with the area for so long it is inevitable that there has been a wealth of tradition, archaeology, history, folklore and legend left for us to explore today. Totnes

Medieval legend states that Totnes was the place where the founder of the British race, Brutus of Troy, first came ashore, although this is based in myth, early settlers of Britain would have arrived up rivers of the South West coast. Totnes means fort or lookout on the nose or ridge of land and was established by the Saxons to defend the Dart Valley from Vikings. It was a market and trading centre, and as a Royal Borough minted its own coins. Totnes was given to a knight called Judhael, who built the Castle and founded the Priory. The town traded with France and grew rich on wool, slates and agricultural produce. In 1206 the town acquired a charter of independence from King John, and sent their first MP to Parliament in 1295. Totnes in the 16th century became one of the 20 richest towns in the country, thanks to Dartmoor tin and the cloth trade. During the Civil War, both sides used the town as a base. Totnes has sought to retain its beauty and character.

Buckfast Abbey

Since time immemorial, deer have been drawn to graze in the sheltered meadows which line the banks of the river Dart in this Devonshire valley and quench their thirst in the cooling waters which flow here from high up on the moors and down towards the sea. It may be that it was a favoured spot for these animals, and people who saw them thought to name the place for them as Buckfast, since the name can mean a place where deer feel safe. For nearly a thousand years, people have been drawn to Buckfast. They have come to search for God. This is what the monastic community of Buckfast Abbey still exists for today. To be a place where the monks and all who visit them might find God. And so they chose those words of psalm 41: "Like the deer that yearns for the running streams, so my soul is yearning for you, my God" as their motto, to express their reason for being here and for welcoming all who are searching to drink from the stream of God’s delight. (Psalm 35)

Torbay

Torbay, with it's three towns - the 19th-century resorts of Paignton and Torquay, and the historic fishing port of Brixham - is backed by steep hills, which creates a suntrap, and results in a micro-climate that is warmer than the rest of the country. Paignton, the oldest of the three towns is in the centre of Torbay, and the distinctive red sandstone lends the area it's Mediterranean feel Torquay faces south, and due to it's sunny aspect, developed a reputation as a health resort. The waterfront, it's marinas, wine-bars, restaurants, theatre and unique town centre shops, offers visitors all the facilities required by an international resort. Brixham nestles in the rugged cliffs at the southern end of Torbay. Fishing has been carried out in Brixham for more than 900 years and remains in the forefront of today's industry
