Fort Lafayette and Denise's Wharf (1812)
Fort Diamond was built in 1812 to protect New York Harbor. In 1825 the 72-gun fortress was later renamed "Fort Lafayette" in honor of General Lafayette.
In 1861 Fort Lafayette was used as a confederate prison during the Civil War. The fort caught fire in 1868. This photo shows Denise's Wharf, to the left.
