Format Comparison: If you have ever felt that "film looks different" this is possibly why.
Try not to look at the girl. Look at the background.. or the lack thereof. All of these shots were exposed @ f4, all shot from the same distance from the subject. Notice the background of each shot. The backgound in the digital shot is relatively sharp and distracting. Note the railing on the neighbors steps growing out of the subjects head. Sidewalk sprouting from her face. The 35mm shot looks pretty good but the sidewalk head growth is still distracting. In the medium format shot (2.25" x 2.25" negatives) backgound just melts into a nice invisible mash of nothing.... letting you focus on the subject. The relationship between sensor size, and focal length of the lens is what effects this. Essentially is its almost impossible to achieve a short depth of field with digital point & shoot camera. This is sometimes an advantage but often leads to busy, cluttered, confusing photos as it is impossible to photographically seperate the subject from the background.
