High Rock Lookout 9-11-09
We return to High Rock Lookout this year.
This hike is in the Sawtooth Range in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest with one of the best views of Mt. Rainier, and a view of Cora Lake, 1400 feet below. The is trail # 266. Trailhead and parking is at 4320 ft. High Rock is a prominent 5,685 feet high peak on Sawtooth Ridge with a sheer 600 foot drop on its north face. Hike length: 3.2 miles round trip. Elevation gain: 1400 feet in, 200 feet out. Rating: 4. Average cost per person: $6.60. Drive SR 7 to past Ashford, to a right turn on Fr 52 [Kernahan Rd.]. Follow FR 52 across the Nisqually River & keep left, continuing past the Big Creek Campground. Turn right onto FR 84 [High Rock LO sign]. Continue on FR 84 passing 8410, 8420 and 8430 onto 8440. Drive up passing a hairpin turn [left & Teeley Creek Tr. #252] to the high point of the road, on a sharp turn [to right], Towhead Gap. Parking is on left and trailhead is on right side of road.
