Auxerre, Abbaye St Germain, Abbey and Museum
The abbey church of St Germain, now a museum, is a treasure house. The belfry is 12thc., while the crypt is one of the few surviving examples of Carolingian architecture with frescos dating back to around 850 AD.
Beneath the church are ancient foundations and tombs. The chapter house contains a fabulous Byzantine silk shroud of around 1000, known as the Shroud of St Germain. Bishop of Auxerre, he lived around 378-348, and died at Ravenna where he was much admired by Galla Placidia. According to local tradition, five noble maidens brought his body back to Auxerre at his request, and at the behest of Galla Placida. One of them, Sainte Magnance, died nearby. Upstairs, a museum contains some splendid archaeological finds.
