3. Laos
After the Gibbon Experience in northern Laos (see previous album), we travelled down the Mekong river for 2 days, stopping overnight at Pak Beng, before reaching Luang Prabang - the former capital city and now a UNESCO World Heritage site. It's a beautiful, green, sleepy town amid the mountainous landscape of northern Laos. Then to Vang Vieng, situated along the Nam Song river among stunningly beautiful limestone mountain scenery. The camera got wet once too often and never worked again (so no more pics). Then to the capital city of Vientiane, visiting the very impressive ceiling paintings of Wat That Luang Tai depicting the stories of Buddha. Finally a bus over the border to Udon Thani in Thailand to fly back to Bangkok for a Thai cooking class, guided tour of the Grand Palace, traditional Thai massage on Khao San Road, and the flight back to Austria.

2. Gibbon Experience, Laos
The Gibbon Experience is a conservation project in the Bokeo reserve of northern Laos. After a 3-hour drive from Houay Xai, we arrived at the remote village of Ban Toup, where we then trekked for a further 4 hours to reach our treehouse. Over 3 days we explored this remote area of pristine rainforest, which is home to the elusive Black Crested Gibbon. An extensive network of cables allow exploration of the jungle at canopy level. A unique experience, and certainly one of our highlights!

1. Angkor, Cambodia
Once the greatest city in the world, Angkor is now a vast area of ancient, mystical temple ruins, partly overgrown by jungle. Although our visit to Cambodia was limited to Angkor and Siem Reap (the nearby town), and the long and bumpy overland road trip to and from Bangkok (an experience in itself!), the country and its people left a wonderful impression - a place to come back to another time!
