In 1987 The historic Aullwood farm barn was burned to the ground by an arsonist. Architectural Reclamation moved a similar barn from another location and adapted it to fit the still existing foundation. This shows the newly reassembled barn in 1988, before it was painted to match the other green and white Aullwood buildings.
Allwood barn, before the 2009 maintenence.
The barn in in 2009 after Architectural Reclamation performed maintenance and repairs on the building. Wondering what happened to the wooden roof? Over thirty years of experience we have found that the ceder shakes currently available, and often requested, are no match for the old growth oak that was plentiful at the time of many older building's construction. It takes a lot of maintenance to make a ceder roof last in Ohio's climate. Today we recommend metal standing seam roofs as a more practical, historically appropriate, option. This is a commercial metal roof, not a standing seam, but it does do an admirable job of protecting this beautiful old barn.

The Sugar House, an educational building at Aullwood, used to demonstrate the making of maple syrup and sugar, shown before the work began.
Another view of the Sugar House, pre-restoration. Notice all of the deterioration around the bottom of the building and the moss that has grown as a result of sitting closed up for most of the year in a moist, wooded location. In fixing up this building we will use a lot of cypress, a wood well suited to damp conditions.
The sugar house with half the old siding removed.
A standing seam roof (shown complete) and new cypress siding, in progress. The pressure treated wood around the bottom of the new siding is modern, but it will hold up in contact with the moist ground, better even than the cypress.
A convenient system of ropes and weights allows volunteer demonstrators to open and close the clerestory vent on the roof, without resorting to ladders and poles.
A good place for a hands-on Ohio history lesson.
Just waiting for maple sugar making season.
