Internship at Kaliaget Organic farm

During the Nov 2010 - March 2011 season 15 students from Sarimukti Agriculture Highschool are doing an internship and course on Organic Agriculture at Kaliaget Organic Farm and School. The work experience is in the paddy fields and in the horticulture garden of the farm. Also the farm animals are tended.

Children School in the Paddyfield, April - July 2010

During the 2010 Second Rice planting season 25 schoolage children (Primary and secondary) every Sunday joined a School in the Ricefield. Every week they study the development of the riceplants and the ecosystem of the field, documented this in a group drawing, discussed what happened over the past week and made suggestions what should be done in the field for the next week. As part of the experience they also made compost.

School in the Ricefield April-August 2010

Since April 2010 our Organic Farm and School is doing a seasonlong Adult learning program on rice cultivation. Once a week farmers and farm workers spend half a day observing the rice plants, the sawah ecosystem and discuss and analyse the natural processes in the ricefield.

Bokashi Compost preparation

After the rice harvest, half of the straw remains in the rice field as mulch and half of the rice straw is collected and chopped, mixed with rice chaff, bran, cow/goat dung, EM4 and molasses, covered and fermented during 8-10 days. After fermentation it is dried and stored.

Starting with Rice Cultivation according to the Madagaskar/SRI method

The SRI (System of Rice Intensification) or Madagaskar method of rice cultivation has been developed in the 1980-ies by Father Henri Laulanie and his Tefy Saina Association (ATS). The SRI method is based on organic agriculture principles, it uses well selected seeds, seedlings are transplanted young (8-12 days), are planted single at a distance of 25x25 cm or more, and fields are only flooded once a week, and after tillering every 2 days.
