Roger Ross says: I have had my koi pond for about 5 years. It's learn-as-you-go.
Of course, ponds require planting. This canna is doing well.
The koi range from 1 to 2.5 feet but some can grow to 4 feet. Lifespan can reach 200 years but the average is 35.
The pond is 12x25 and 4 to 5 feet deep. It holds 11,000 gallons. I keep about 20 koi at a time.
Lotus blooms. See the bees?
There is a lot of detail--rocks, grasses, even a turtle.
Koi heaven
A shot of the bridge
The waterfall circulates the water and the sound is pleasant.
The turtle is a nice touch.
Even statuary!
I put a tent over the pond this year because the trees are still too small for shade. A pond in full sun grows a lot of algae and it is hard to keep the water clear.
The fireplace is similar to one my dad had in Ohio. The logs are concrete and stack like Lincoln Logs, no tools or mortar needed. They come in several sizes, colors and configurations. I have details if anyone is interested.
Early June '08. The cover is in place and everything is starting to grow.
June '08 - our backyard oasis
July '08 - What a difference a couple weeks can make!
I would like to find another water gardener to trade lotus seeds with.
This lotus is always a dependable performer.
