Cliff Dwellers trading post built in 1890. Nine miles west of Marble Canyon on the Arizona strip and eighty miles from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.
Grand Canyon Lodge at the North Rim over looks Transept Canyon. No rooms in the lodge but the dining room is a must! Get a window table for incredible views.
Kay at Bright Angle Point. Walking, or crawling if you are afraid of heights, distance from the Grand Canyon Lodge.
View from Bright Angel Point of Transept Canyon (forefront) and Bright Angel Canyon (the great gash running diagonally across the picture). Zoroaster Temple is at the very top left.
View of Bright Angel Point from North Kaibab trail. Can you make out the two people standing on the point?
Roaring Springs Canyon, our hike for the day. Look close to make out the bridge at the bottom of the canyon.
Kay a little over a mile and a half in...just past the tunnel and pumping station.
We're headed for the trees at the bottom left. Roaring Springs gives them life, providing much needed shade and water before the grueling climb out of the canyon.
This is a closer view of the last photo. You can see Kay on the trail, which was blasted out of the cliff wall by WPA workers in the thirties. The trail here is about three feet wide. A misstep would almost certainly be fatal, given a fall of several hundred feet to the canyon floor below.
There are a couple of miles to go but we can see the bridge across the canyon in front of us.
Kay crossing the bridge heading for the trail beyond.
Pretty much at the bottom and time for a long break before returning.
Our destination...Roaring Springs. Named Roaring Springs because it is so loud you can hear it from up on top of the rim. This spring is the only water supply for both the North and South rims of the Grand Canyon. That dark line you see to the left is the pipeline laid in the thirties. It goes five miles to the North Rim and seventeen miles across the Grand Canyon and Colorado Rivers to the South Rim and Grand Canyon Village. The line is old and in much need of replacement. Breakages are frequent and often shut off water to Phantom Ranch. The North and South rims each store about two months supply of water so are not as impacted by breaks in the line.
