I came across these photos of a 2001 houseboat trip on Lake Powell and thought you might enjoy them. It is one of the most beautiful places we have ever been and the trip the most relaxing we have ever taken. It amazed us that you give them a credit card and drivers license, take 45 minutes of instruction, and they turn you loose with a million-dollar 54-foot houseboat.
Lake Powell was formed by damming Glen Canyon at Page, AZ. It's about 200 miles long...has 2000 miles of striking shoreline...and is 560 feet deep at the dam.
Upper deck is great for a nap or fishing platform.
With all the side canyons, you can always find one to yourself.
The Sierra Club has tried for years to get the government to take down the dam and return Glen Canyon to it's original state. The dam restricts the natural flow of the Colorado river through the Grand Canyon. This has caused changes in the ecosystem. The Interior Department has been doing prescribed "floods" to help restore sand bars and beaches in the Canyon creating habitat for endangered species.
See why it's so relaxing?
Spent the nights fishing for stripers. Daughter Heather got the biggest.
54-foot boat has full kitchen/living room with built in appliances, two state rooms below, two full bathrooms, a water slide, and huge upper deck.
Son-in-law Greg trying his luck from the shore. With this view, who cares if you catch anything.
Most visitors to Lake Powell are on a day trip as part of a Las Vegas vacation. You can take a half day cruise out of Wahweap that takes you 50 miles up river to the world's largest natural arch. They hit several side canyons on the return...some so narrow that the ship actually scrapes on both sides of the canyon walls to get through.
Emerald water and colorful cliff walls.
