First stop, pancakes (薄煎饼), chee cheong fun (猪肠粉) with char siew (叉烧) or prawn fillings, etc etc at a hidden corner in JB (马来西亚新山).
The wife runs the chee cheong fun side, the husband the pancake side
The chilli's too hot for Sally!
Loving my chee cheong fun! (from Sally's camera)
Oh man, yummiest. Maybe yummier than the ones I had at yumcha in Hong Kong. Crap, now I'm missing Hong Kong ...
Trying our hands at making pan cakes!
I didn't try these youtiao (油条) cuz too full from the delicious chee cheong fun and pancakes ... but these sure look super crispily melt-in-your-mouth delcious! And imagine it with a bowl of soya bean milk *dreamy*
Trying out as helpers at this pancake stall ... aiyoh, with our skills, cannot make it man! Hah!
Our most enthusiastic, super energetic tour organiser/guide, Jeffrey! A round of applause please! And the eggs rock in their cradle. Heh ...
The boss made these ... these are none like those we made ourselves ... haha, still good, the one I made *with more peanuts! Shh ...*
My precious pancake simmer in the pan ... not bad eh ... ^___^"'
The kind boss teaches us how to make a good piece of pancake!
Greedy girl, piggy it up! (^___^*)
Can't get enough of the chee cheong fun
Lady boss preparing the chee cheong fun skin ... it's made on the spot as the orders come! So smooth, tender and melt-in-your-mouth ...
Can you spot the chee cheong fun/pancake place?
Hongxin and Yunxuan ... my new CS friends!
Dao huay (豆花) with ginkgo biloba (白果), the first time I've had it in this mix! Absolutely delicious, and I hope I'm a few notches smarter now that the ginkgo nuts are good for the brain ... unless, perhaps, I'm beyond hope (0.0"')
Say cheese everyone!! By now, we're already sorta full ... hmm ... how are we gonna survive this?
The road trip continues ...
Oh my camera loves Sally, hates me, fails to get the attention of Yunxuan :P
This is why self-portraits are so fun. Sometimes you don't get it, sometimes it's perfect (^___^*) (from Sally's camera)
The majorly crowded bak kut teh (肉骨茶) place! It's public holiday (Deepavali) so that explains the crowd maybe, but of course, it's really the superb bak kut teh that pulled them in!
We couldn't get a seat ... we had to set up our tables and chairs at ... *see the following pictures*
We're table #83. No joke. And it's only 10 am.
Zhisheng, Jeff's youngest son, the appointed videographer of the day. The sweetest kid ever. I mean, ever.
Workers buzzing about preparing our delicious meal.
I cannot resist it ok. My shadow shots.
The remnants. I guess it must be good.
Phew. How to wash the pots fast enough to fill new orders?
A trickle of leftover bak kut teh soup on the floor triggers a river of imagination.
After the party is over, the bottle sits quietly next to the flower pot.
And so ... is it coming to 83 yet?
Our food cooking on the charcoal-powered stove.
This must be what makes good bak kut teh. My favourite beverage for the soul - 茶, tea, teh.
After the looooooooooooooooooooooooooog wait ... first time dining out of a garage. There's always a first! v(^___^*)v
OK now, next stop!
We'll take a boat from there, but first, let's stop for ice cream and cold drinks here.
Where we had ice cream, Coke, tea or iced water.
Into the sea.
Happy Sally. She doesn't take seafood but goes on a seafood trip so she could get pictures. I think she went home with lotsa awesome shots!
Mending the net, ridding it of dirt and stray catches, getting ready for the next fishing trip out in the sea.
Ancient crustaceans. Horseshoe crabs, my English friend tells me. We didn't eat these.
The prawn's already limp when I finally managed to hold on to it.
This is how you eat a struggling prawn ... tear off its head, then peel the skin off and pop in your mouth!
Feasting on live sashimi, though for me, I wouldn't touch anything undead. It just didn't feel right tearing it apart when it's still alive.
After a while, Jeffrey boiled the prawns so that they didn't become unfresh.
Pretty flower crabs (花蟹)
People come to buy fresh seafood here, by the kilo.
17 October 2009
Jeff boiling the crabs
Haphazard drawers. Nice.
Ever ready, or not?
The remains ... back into the sea!
Group shot! (from Sally's camera)
Boating onto the next stop ... hurray!
The kelong uncle, boat operator
Announcing our arrival ... thanks, buddy.
Fishing prancing in the pond after we threw in some fish feed
Love the air of serenity here. And the clothes hanging on the wall conjure up a nostalgic feeling. Somewhat. I dunno why.
We fed the fish! (from Sally's camera)
While waiting for the fish to bite, might as well take a picture together! (from Sally's camera)
First time fishing. Unsuccessful because the fish was too strong and escaped with the bait and hook >.<"' (from Sally's camera)
Sally and her catch of the day!
Jeffrey taking the hook off the fish's mouth. Looking at the bleeding fish, I had the good mind to swear off seafood for life and turn vegetarian ... but ... I still like seafood the best >.<"'
Oysters. Gigantic oysters like I've never seen before.
The diver (right) passes up the oyster he recovers from under the sea to his friend up on the kelong (left)
Beautiful creatures from the sea. I want to learn to dive. First, learn to swim.
Little organisms poking their heads out of the red coral (?) ... dunno what they are though ...
Oysters in my tummy ... (^___^*)
The divers now use hammers to crack open their catch. We ordered 20 oysters.
Then you cut the flesh out of the shell ... so much for protection huh?
Giant fresh live oysters waiting to be consumed
Dip in some soy sauce and wasabi
This is beauty.
Back to the mainland. The weather's fantastic. It was hot but the sea breeze was good ... so good it was enough to buoy me to sleep, discounting the fact that I woke at 5.20 am of course. *yawn*
The infamous Kota Tinggi waterfalls. It's my first time there, ashamed Malaysian speaking here >.<"'
Woo hoo! Back in JB. At the hawker centre, Jeff passed the seafood over to the hawker to cook up a sumptuous seafood dinner to wrap up this wonderful, non-stop-eating foodie trip.
OMG ... how to resist this leh!! 真伤脑筋啊!
Kambing (goat) soup (left), herbal chicken (right)
Ikan bakar (barbecued stingray 烤黄貂鱼)
The fish, our catches, in sweet and sour sauce. Absolutely heavenly delicious!
Yummy yummy!
Steamed. The healthy option is also delicious. You can never go wrong with fish, especially fish this fresh.
Fried. Dry, not really my favourite, but is still good.
Oatmeal crayfish (小龙虾) (top), petai and onions (bottom) ... I miss petai!!! Delicious. The crayfish is heavenly.
Hah, greedy girl gets the trophy dish of the night!
Crab in salted egg ... first time eating crab in this culinary style
The oysters, now fried, but still as delicious. I was full to the nose by now, so I had only one. Anymore and I'd puke through my eyes. Haha ...
